When I Fall

By JK

There are so many levels to the word fall
I’ve tried to find ways to explain them all

Autumn is my favorite season
Using the word fall seems like treason

It’s such an easy way to say something that feels so beautiful
Cool, crisp wind & fresh air that’s so plentiful

It often makes me want to fall asleep
Listening to trees & the breeze puts me in so deep

Speaking of so deep, what about how we fall in love
That phrase always stumps me, makes me wonder

Then I shrug
When you fall the first thought is that it hurts

It’s painful just like love when you realize it’s not gonna work
To think it all started out with a smile, because you’re a flirt

So you fall back and then you’re back on once again
When is this cycle gonna come to an end

Now you’re careful, fully aware
You won’t ever fall through the cracks

All it took is one time
Now you’re back on the right track

And
You can also chill out and cut the next guy some slack

The word “Fall” can first be thought of as something negative or hurtful. I really liked that you turned something people consider pain, into something beautiful. The rhyme flows perfectly and I like how you go from describing the season of fall, to falling in love. The line that resonated with me the most is “When you fall the first thought is that it hurts It’s painful just like love when you realize it’s not gonna work” and I feel like this is relatable to many. My interpretation of this poem is someone going through a continuous cycle of falling in and out of love, through all the seasons of fall, and something that should be relaxing can also be so painful. All it took was one time for someone to break a heart. I really enjoyed this poem and don’t have constructive feedback to add.

This poem is fun to read because I like fall and everything that tags along with it. This poem is very relaxing to read gets the reader in the fall mood. All the descritptve words help picture what the author is trying to say. Using the five senses to describe whats going on really helps the reader understand the point of view. I like how you used the word fall in different contexts. You got this and remember the best is yet to come!

The word fall is very complex, and I think you described it wonderfully! A lot of people are afraid to fall from what they have and what they have accomplished.

“When is this cycle gonna come to an end” This is actually one of the most talked about in a lot of my criminal justice courses, and something hopefully to change within the system! Very powerful!

I am writing this on the 1st day of fall which I find an odd but nice coincidence!

I hope this fall brings you nothing but positive things!

I really like this poem! The words create a sense of imagery and you can really create a picture in your head. The repetitive use of the word “fall” ties everything together and creates a sense of meaning. I think this poem really shows the process of liking someone and not really sure where it going to go when you put in all of the effort and are not sure if you are going to receive the same back or not. Keep up the great work!

Hello! I really liked your poem. The bolding of the word fall is so intelligent as it brings many different meanings to light. I have a suggestion that might be beneficial for you. I would switch your 5th and 6th lines around. It would make more logical sense to have them in that order.

  6. Vernie on September 25, 2022 at 8:45 PM

    Great job on this!

  7. Eliza Jones on September 25, 2022 at 9:43 PM

The first thing that stands out to me in this poem is the word fall which I believe was your intention with bolding it. I also feel like your use of rhyming really gave the poem a nice flow to it and made it easy to read. Great work!

    JK,
I too have FALLEN and I couldn’t get back up…
I think they call it “falling in love” because it’s always an accident. It was definitely an accident. Ouch. I still have the scar. But hey, fall is still a lovely season. CJ

JK reading your poem about the beauty and the double meaning of fall is very wonderful. Just like you my favorite season is Autumn for the same reason just because I love fall so much. Using that power of how we fall in love someone is very crucial to our modern day society. Based on if we do fall in love with someone and they’re not there to catch us we will break. I could tell after reading your poem you tried to keep falling in love with someone and you used the expression of it cycling back. JK you are not alone with the horrible cycle, I too have felt this way for a very long time. But there is always going to be someone to catch us in the end.

I was immediately drawn to your poem because my favorite season has always been fall as well. This work does such a great job intertwining the interpretations of that word in every sense and making a beautiful piece of art out of it. It’s interesting to think about the term “falling” when we think of love, but I think it’s because both falling in the literal sense and falling into love with another person are risks. The wonderful thing about love, though, is that the risk can lead us to the most spectacular of places. And your poetry does a great job of portraying that. Thank you so much for sharing.

The usage of the word such a powerful word like, Treason, shows a deep emotional connection to your thoughts on Autumn. You start your poem mentioning the different usage of the word fall. That usage of the different types of fall through the poem and their meaning to you enhances your poetry. You tell the reader what fall means to you along with examples that most can understand. The poem’s stanzas flow into each other with the connection of the different context of fall. The understander of falling, in terms of failing, increases sympathy and compassion especially in ones you can see yourself in is moving.

I really enjoyed reading this poem, and I was really drawn into its format of it. I liked how you bolded the word “fall” every time and how every line rhymed with the previous line. The format brought another type of feeling into the poem. The last line of your poem is also a great mindset to have. Everyone should be cut slack no matter what the situation is. The pain will go away and you will find your way in life.

  15. Alexis on October 16, 2022 at 9:35 PM

    JK,

I loved reading about your poem containing the variations of the definition “fall”. You explain how the word fall can often be associated with treason while you describe the beautiful season autumn. It spoke to me as you described the characteristics and feelings of autumn, because like yourself, autumn is my favorite season too. You then discuss the topic of love and the heartache it can bring. I love how honest you are about how it can hurt to fall and the worry about finding someone new. You also show how overtime we as humans learn to look out for these things and become more use to these emotions, therefore we can never fall and break like we did before.

    Hi JK,
I absolutely love how you set this poem. Instead of a regular poem that rhymes and is short and sweet. This felt like you were more having a conversation with me, it was very personal and made me want to read more! I don’t think I ever realized how many different was fall can really be used. It’s kind of crazy it makes you think how there became some many definitions of fall. There are so many other words like that too! I also really liked how each example tied into the next example. This was really easy for me to enjoy and read, and I am not a reading person! Thank you for this!

To start with, I love reading about fall, therefore I greatly enjoyed this. It was interesting how you bolded and incorporated fall throughout the text. In the line “Cool, crisp wind & fresh air that’s so plentiful,” I could really picture the imagery. The poem’s later use of the term “fall” was both fascinating and unexpected. I look forward to reading more of your pieces!

    JK,

Thank you for sharing this! I enjoyed the images you created. Your poem also unpacks all the layers of a word that seems so simple upon first glance. Keep writing!

I love this poem. The repetitive use of “fall’ to leave me with feelings of positivity was very clever. Thank you.

  20. Abigail Walsh on October 24, 2022 at 11:07 PM

The repetition of the word fall highlights its importance and many meanings. The contrast between the ideas of beauty and pain shows the many emotions within this poem. Each line tells a different story about the word fall, a very good tactic in showing the different elements to the word and the many emotions that come with it. The last line also shows it not just the author that has as trouble with falling showing the author to have more empathy.

  21. Tiff on October 25, 2022 at 11:21 AM

Great use of different meanings of the word, “Fall”, throughout this and I just have to say how impressed I am by your optimistic spirit and how you don’t let your past experiences cause you to be jaded about your future. Keep up the amazing work and positive outlook in everything you do!

  23. aaliyah on October 30, 2022 at 11:14 PM

Hello JK, your poem was very fun to read. I love the whole concept you had of taking one word and using it in different situations to explain and describe the many definitions and levels this word carries. I also love how you resort one of the levels to falling in love, and how when we fall our first thought is that it hurt, and how when we realize in love that things won’t work out it resembles that same feeling. That comparison was greatly written. The last level when you explain how when you are aware you won’t fall through the cracks was also interesting to me. I found myself comparing that scenario to other aspects of life as well. Like if you learn from your mistakes you won’t fall into the same pattern of making them again. I really loved this poem, and I wanted to thank you for sharing this piece of work.
I wish you the best! – Aaliyah.

Hello, I enjoyed reading your poem. I thought it was an interesting poem idea to take one word and explore its different meanings through poetry. I think your writing flows beautifully from one analogy of the word “fall” to the next. I think the idea of a continuous cycle in this poem is quite interesting as fall is a season the world circles through every year.

  27. Kristen Shave on November 16, 2022 at 1:36 PM

The complexity and depth of this poem is amazing. I personally love looking at the dual meanings of words so this really speaks to me. I never have thought of the word “fall” in this way, so you have truly opened my eyes to this topic! You come across with such an amazing spirit in your writing!

  29. Nicholas on November 23, 2022 at 1:49 PM

I enjoyed your use of the word “fall” in your poem. While the word fall is a singular word, it can have many interpretations in the proper contexts like all words do, but your take on fall is based on romantic interpretations and the actual definition. To fall can be consequential in getting hurt, but to fall in love can have the same consequence as being emotionally hurt. And your ending felt very justifying in the sense that when getting hurt and like our mistakes, we should learn from them.

  30. Al on November 27, 2022 at 12:05 PM

Thank you for sharing your poem and I liked the concept of fall being the center of the poem. The imagery regarding fall was so accurate especially the line about the air! There is a special feeling towards the season of fall and your poem did capture that moment.

I really like the poem I like how you were able to turn around a word that some people see as negative and show that there are layers to it. You can look at it in a positive way. You created very nice pictures throughout and it was very relaxing to read.

    Hi JK,

Very good poem. I like your writing style and explanation of “Falling”. I have never given much thought to it yet until after reading your poem. I think we do use the word fall as the double meaning behind it alludes that there is usually something painful in the process of “falling” before something better comes after like falling and getting back up. Falling in love, sometimes it doesn’t work out but it doesn’t mean months or years to come we wont find a better love than what we had before. But the process is just very tricky.

  36. Riley Thomas on December 27, 2022 at 2:48 PM

This is so precisely written. You never really think about he phrase “fall in love” in the same aspect as “falling down” but it is true. Falling in love does hurt and that’s probably why they do use the word “fall”. Maybe Autumn is also referred to as fall because it’s after summer when temperatures gets colder and people associate warm weather with being happy so it is the fall of our emotions. This poem really made me think, I’m very impressed.

  37. Allison R. on December 30, 2022 at 11:59 AM

JK, reading this poem brought me to a calm and peaceful state, I like how your brought in detail with the words like “crisp” and “Speaking so deep”, it was able to make me a picture in my head and imagine this scene, I do see you use fall a lot throughout this poem to tie into other sentences, I fell as you could pick another word to tie into those lines so you exclude the season fall and the action.
