God?
By DL
If you there God, and you can hear God
Send me to hell, yeah, I’m prepared God
Give me a slow death, I want the “chair” God
You ain’t a fair God, you don’t care God
If you can hear God, then why ain’t you here God
You a rare God, ‘cause you never there God
When I’m sad God, you become a glad God
You never satisfied even when I give you everything I have God
Where’s my dad God? Are you my dad God?
‘Cause if you are, I don’t wanna follow in your path God
And if I’m your work of art, then you did a bad job
Your Son failed God, how could you let him take them nails God?
He was impaled God, I know you heard him yell God
I guess it’s all good, but where’s the “Holy Grail” God?
Answer the question God, am I your self-reflection God?
Do you rock dreads, an earring, and a bright shiny necklace God?
Is that even me God? Then tell me who you see God
‘Cause before I get back on my knees God, I’d rather rest in peace God
My good deeds God? What good deeds God?
How could I be humble to a million enemies God?
What is “life” God? WHAT IS “LIFE” GOD?!
Never mind, just tell me why it comes with a price God
You see my mom God? That’s your wife God
Watch her for me please, be her lifeguard
I just hope that she believes in the right God
What’s wrong God? Are you alright God?
The questions I never heard you ask your child on these cold nights God

Dear Free Minds Poet,
Your poem “God?” is amazing. It drew me in in ways that I didn’t expect, and it left me wanting to read it again and again. The rhythm created through meter and repetition is very effective. Congratulations of a FINE poem!

Wow. Incredible poem. This poem really makes the reader think. I experience the questions with you, the emotions with you. The emotions this poem brings up are really powerful. Keep writing. You have talent.
You are very talented at really making the reader feel your anger and frustration. I think this poem would be amazing as spoken word, with the audience sharing in the feelings of rage and redemption. I love how relentless you are in your demands to God, the feeling that you won’t give up until you have answers. My favorite lines are “Do you rock dreads, an earring, and a bright shiny necklace God?” and “My good deeds God? What good deeds God?” You are too smart to settle for easy answers. Please keep writing; you are so talented.
The raw emotion behind this is tremendous. Powerful to read, even more so when I imagine someone speaking it. Anger is not something forgotten. But if left unchecked it will control you. Your potential is there in your writing, don’t let anger steal that away. Thank you for sharing a piece yourself with the rest of us.
I am a student in a community service course at Wayne State in Detroit whose goal is to engage with the community beyond the university. When I discovered Free Minds I was immediately thrilled to see the connections build around your writings and heart, and what you have to offer is a powerful and beautiful gift to the community. It was a true privilege getting the opportunity to read what is on your heart and mind, your desires and passions, thoughts, and struggles. You have so much to say, so much wisdom to give, and such deep experiences and desires to share with the community that people from all walks of life, backgrounds, beliefs, and ages can deeply connect with and affiliate with. Keep engaging with the community and making your voice heard. You bring healing, hope, and renewal of mind to many who have the privilege to share in your poetry. Your poem is so real and raw- a depiction of thoughts everyone has in their life. In a world that doesn’t make sense, that exists with pain and suffering, it becomes increasingly easy to doubt God is a good God or that He is even there. Is he a puppeteer, randomly pulling strings and laughing all the while? Does He have a master plan that we are a part of but that we don’t get to know? Why does he allow suffering and pain? These are all valid questions I have wrestled with myself and that lie at the root of your written work. What you wrote is so powerful, because it is not only a reflection, it is a scream, it is an angry challenge to God, it is a soft cry out of pain and brokenness, it is all these things in one. Something to chew on, something I always think about is that, while we blame God for not being just, in another sense, He really is not a just God. We got the gift of grace and salivation in response to our sin, not what we really deserved for that punishment. He made a way out for us by offering eternal life to those who believe in Him. We could not do anything to earn or deserve it, no matter how many good deeds or flawless lives we try to live. He willingly gave Himself up for us, so that He could be in relationship with us. Just something to ponder on and be grateful for.
Sending claps and a standing ovation to you. As someone who no longer follows any religion, I have wondered all of these things too. Topics like these keep me awake at night. Thank you for pulling raw feelings and emotions out for all of us to see.
