Maria
By VM
My soul is resting
As I wait, my heart is beating like I ran a hundred miles
I’m starting to believe I’m chasing a ghost
I was taught to never give up
Now I’m sitting in my room with my head in my lap
Singing to myself, Babe, come back!
I know I made a brutal mistake
I also know me apologizing is not enough
Please God I call upon you for your help
So you can bring back the love of my life
I feel lost and so empty without her
I’m having shocking pain all through my body
My friend asked me why is I’m still going through this
I told him, you wouldn’t understand
Because this girl done something to me
No other female haven’t done
That’s why I’m in the trance I’m in

Dear VM,
I thought this poem was very interesting and emotional. It leaves the reader wanting more context into what happened between you and your loved one, but you also give us enough hints to put the pieces together in our own way. I really loved how you did this, and allow us to look deeper into the context of each line to create the story you’re trying to convey. The last five lines of your poem were my favorite because it shows just how strong our affection for someone else can be and how it can overpower other aspects of our lives. I enjoyed that your friend doesn’t quite seem to grasp how you are feeling, and the way you explain love as a trance was a great word choice. Great job and thank you for sharing!
