Jail Bird

By AB

A bird once flew over a prison and sat on the bars of a window sill
The prisoner fed the bird crackers and the bird ate to his fill
The prisoner put water in a top for the bird to wet his beak
The prisoner done a good deed before he went to sleep

The bird didn’t leave–
He became a jail bird that didn’t know he was free

I Saw A Cloud

By AG

I saw a cloud pass by today

It reminded me of you

It was just one cloud out of many,

but out of all the clouds in the sky,

I saw it. It caught my eye and my eyes lingered

on it until it hid behind a bigger cloud

I knew it was there still, waiting a moment

before showing itself again

And there it was, with its gentle curves

and mysterious nature, one moment this shape, then the next moment another.

As the cloud passed by the sun,

it grew more bright and cheerful, but the further away it drifted, the darker it became.

It’s 4:38 now and you’re raining, and the sky is dark.

I SAW A CLOUD!

Spring

By SJ

The sun is moving higher into the sky,
The days are bluer and brighter,
The pigeons are happily in flight,
The rains have been suspended,
and the beetles will soon begin to emerge from their
slumber in the earth.

Not long now,
And we will swelter,
In the blinding “Washington DC” sun,
That hangs like a bare light bulb,
from a wire above us.

The squirrels will take to running,
Crossing the concrete streets,
Searching for victuals.

Our little patch of planet is swinging,
Toward the furnace of “Sol” at a thousand miles per hour,
Soon, very soon its full effect,
Will broil the tops of our heads like eggs frying a pan.

Let us enjoy this in-between time, while we are still able!

For the Birds…

By DC

They say prison is for the birds you know,
But I think those who say it just don’t understand…
Because the other day I was in my window,
When I just happen to see one land…

And I saw the look in its eyes, when it observed the scene,
And when it noticed where it was at…
It noticed the place was over crowded with people,
Some White, some Mexican, Some Black …

It saw how they all was separated in sections,
It guess it was because of their color…
It wonder, shouldn’t they be standing against the system,
But they chose to stand against each other…

It saw the food the people ate was at the bottom of the barrel,
To the point, it rather keep eating worms…
It never seen a place so filthy,
And they say it’s the one with germs…

It watched all the looks on the people’s faces,
Some showing depression, anger, and it can understand,
Because a place like this got to be built only to break the strongest man…

But they say prison is for the birds you know,
Well, I find it hard to say…
Because if prison is built for the birds like they thought,
Then why can it fly away?

Things of That Nature

By DC

Yeah they say I grew up where I’m not wanted.
Where my surroundings are beautiful,
and all the others growing look different than me.

But who’s to blame?
‘Cause I know I was planted here for a reason.
Even if the world don’t know or see.

They trust all the others,
with their pretty faces that just make you give them attention.

And their sharp bodies that make people be careful how they handle them,
if touching them is their intention.

Who’s to say I’m not just as beautiful, and deserve some respect and power?
Cause even though they’re roses and I’m a dandelion,
I’m still considered a flower.
