Running
By DJ
I am running from my past
Because that life is too fast
I am running like a mad man
When I look over my shoulder, I see darkness
I feel like I’m running but still in the same spot
If I run fast enough
I might get to my destination
I am running from my fears
Because I’m scared to face them
I am running like a chicken with no head
When I look over my shoulder
I see my fears are gettin’ closer
If I run fast enough
I might make it to my goal
I am running from my nightmares
Because I dream too much
I am running like my life is in danger
When I look over my shoulder, I see my nightmares
I feel like my dreams are hunting me
If I run fast enough
I might get away
I am running towards my dream
Because dreams come true
I am running like I want it
I feel like anything is possible
If I run fast enough
My dream will come true

Wow, what a great progression in this poem! At the beginning it seems like running from fear is the subject of the poem and it will be the sole focus. The transition from running from fear to running towards hope is done really well. I can’t believe how uplifted I felt by the time I finished the poem! The contrast of hope and fear, dreams and nightmares is done well and also there’s a certain fluidness – when does a nightmare just become a dream, when does confronting a fear become a hope? Different sides of the same coin but sometimes also the lines between those sides can get blurry.
