Family

By LM

Never take them for granted
They can be here today and gone tomorrow
It may be too late for the “I wish I would have” moments
Cherish them while you can
There will always be a constant lack of communication
But you’ll always be family

Every family has their share of ups and downs
But that brings the family closer together
Family is there when you need them
Sometimes missing in action
But there when you need them
Family is all we have
And sometimes we lose sight of that
But nevertheless
We’re reminded when we need them

    Dear LM,

This is a lovely poem and important reminder to value our families. I’m sure this is relatable for many of us, across cultures, races, socioeconomic status, and more. Loving our families is such a universal message. It’s natural to have conflicts with our families sometimes, but at the end of the day, for most people, their family loves them and will be there for them. I really like the contrasts in this poem between the ups and downs we might experience with our families and your reminders to cherish them.

    Sincerely,
    Joyce

This poem really hits home for me because sometimes I have to remind myself that no matter how much my family and I may disagree, we are really all that we have and we are stronger when we stick together rather than trying to do everything on our own. You only get one family and it is important to cherish and appreciate them while they are here. There will be many times that you may feel unappreciated or feel like you should be treated better by your family but it is important to remember that everyone makes mistakes and, for the most part, your family would never do anything to purposefully hurt or harm you so communicating with one another is a very important step in starting to understand each other and the reasons behind our actions.

    Hi LM,
You are right, we should never take the ones that love us for granted. Family will be around us when we are born and hopefully when we die. We should never think that we cannot repair broken bonds with our family. They will be there for us if we ask for help. Thank you for reminding me that I should cherish my family every day and if one of them come to me for help, I should make him or her my priority. That’s how it should be. Cheers, Gisela

    LM,

I love how you remind your readers about the importance of family. As someone who recently moved out of my family’s house, I’m starting to realize how much I took for granted being with them all the time. I think you make a great point that regardless of the relationship and communication (or lack thereof), family should be there. It’s something that we definitely forget.

Cherishing family is truly so important, and that message was delivered well by your poem. Sometimes in life its easy to pursue our individual paths and forget about those that helped us in the past, including our family. However, the greatest service we could ever do for ourselves and our families is to put in the effort to rekindle lost communication and relationships! thank you for sharing, It truly made me reflect!

I feel this sends a powerful message and reminds us that family is important

Great piece LM! I have valued time with family a lot more especially in this year where I’ve gotten to spend more time with loved ones which I hadn’t done as much while I was away at college. A great reminder!

I really resonated with the fact that every family has ups and downs but eventually we all come together. During quarantine, I have been home with my family, and I think living with each other for so long has made us realize that we do disagree and fight a lot about many things, but at the end of it we all come together closer than ever

I really love this poem because it help me remind that myself that I am never alone and I always have people behind my back. I like the writer because he tries to be supportive to his audience as much as possible. The writer emphasizes that family is very important because you spend with your family members throughout your life no matter what.

  11. David on February 24, 2021 at 10:12 AM

I really thought this piece was impactful as I have lost a family member throughout this time of quarantine due to cancer. I really understood how deep the root of family goes and how we should always hold the ones we love dearly and appreciate their presence everyday. I like how you acknowledge that we take them for granted at times but then snap back into the fact that we have to love. I think the only piece of advice would be to somehow replace one of the ‘need them’ with something a bit more detailed. Overall though, this poem really struck the heart and reminded me to treasure the family around me.

LM, lovely poem! It touches on a really important topic, and really shows how much you realize you cherish family 🙂

I love this poem! Family is so important, and we always love them even when we may not like them. The only critique i have is that perhaps you could introduce a rhyme scheme!

  14. Dhara Patel on February 24, 2021 at 6:15 PM

Love the meaning of this poem! I truly agree on the aspect of how family should always be loved because they are the ones who are always going to be there for you no matter what. I also like how the second stanza goes back and forth stating “Family is…”. Good use of a pattern there.

  15. AK on February 24, 2021 at 10:51 PM

Hi LM! This was a great piece, thank you for sharing! Your writing on why family is important and to cherish the moments rather than dwell on what could have been was very powerful! I liked how you discussed the pain with the past and future especially the “But nevertheless, we’re reminded when we need them”. My only question, is how would you change this piece if you wrote it for another time period? When you mention communication it silo’s it into today and communication but how would your theme extend to others? Thank you!

This poem was so amazing! It really made me take a step back and really appreciate everything and everyone that I take for granted on a day to day basis. I loved the line that included “I wish I would have.” Unfortunately, many times we don’t realize the value of people until they are no longer with us. Thank you so much for sharing such an important message, can’t wait to read more!

You really have a way with words that bring it to life. I think there is a lot of raw emotion going on here that is prominent, and the meaning of your poem is very strong and moving. Family is forever, and I think your words beautifully captured the essence of how important they are.

Really where would we be without family….the ones that I have seen us through the worse of times. Thank you for this inspirational piece. No matter how many times we have heard something we always need that reminder. Family…thank you for this…..

    LM,

Thank you so much for sharing this poem. Reading this poem made me miss my family so much. Like you said, it’s so easy to take them for granted especially because they are always there for you. The transition that you make from the first to the second stanza really conveys the importance of family. Please keep writing!

Dear LM, this is a good account of appreciation for family. Family does need to appreciated. They are the only people you can not choose to be connected to.

    Hi LM,

It is very true that sometimes when you’re in the thick of it, you forget how important family is. I have definitely experience that myself. I think a great addition to the poem would be if you could touch on the idea of “chosen family” and how that connects with your blood family. I really enjoyed this poem and I encourage you to keep writing! Thank you for your message.

  28. Veda on March 15, 2021 at 3:19 PM

As someone who just recently lost a family member, thank you for this. Thank you for this reminder. I think after death and through grief that we sometimes forget that there are people who are still here. Here to help, here to care, here to just be there. I loved the line “Family is all we have” because it is such a grounding moment in the poem. It expressed humility, love, kindness all in five words. The last sentence of the first stanza is so powerful because it shows that no matter what, you are never alone–and I think that that is a beautiful message. Thank you so much for sharing this, for your reminder.

  29. jessica on March 20, 2021 at 11:52 AM

    LM,
Thank you for sharing your poem! It’s truly very insightful, calling attention to the common issue that we often do overlook our family and take them for granted. I think the way you ended the poem too, by writing that “We’re reminded when we need them” is incredibly powerful, as it connotes that we will always lean on them in times of need and that family is the first ones that we will go to.

  30. Aprile on March 20, 2021 at 12:20 PM

This is such an excellent poem! This hits home for me, as my family is primarily responsible for forming who I am today. Family is so important, and I love how you touched on what they mean to you and how much you truly need them.

    LM,

I️ loved this poem! For me personally, family has played a big part in my life and your poem just made me reflect on how much they truly mean to me. I️ know it is not like that for everyone so I️ consider myself blessed. Although, family does not just have to be through blood but of those friends who have stuck by you, supported you, and have always been there for you. Because of you, I️ now want to call and check in with my loved ones where as before that thought might not have crossed my mind today. Keep writing! I️ wish the best for you and your family. – MN

Hi! I felt drawn to your poem as family is so important to me. I think we can all use a reminder not to take any time with our family for-granted. It is so important that we cherish the big and little moments with our families. I loved your sweet poem and think it is a great reminder for everyone of the importance of family in our lives.

  34. Natalie Cairo on March 27, 2021 at 3:05 PM

This poem was written beautifully. I agree that some people can overlook the importance of family. The saying blood is thicker than water seems to ring true throughout this poem. I sometimes think that we can choose our family. The idea of the found family trope I guess. I know that if I’m in trouble or have my doubts, I can always count on my family to have my back. I live about 14 hours away from my family right now. It is really tough. Obviously it isn’t as tough as what you are going through right now. I used to be homesick all the time. Every little thing reminded me of my family and the life I used to know. Change is really scary and I always wished my family could be with me through it all. But sometimes, we have to remember that this is our life. Not theirs. We must walk down some paths alone in order to truly know who we are. Awesome poem. I hope you are staying safe and I hope you know that your family loves you very much.

Family is something that is very important to me, so I connected a lot with this poem. My favorite line was the third line, “ It may be too late for the ‘I wish I would have’ moments. I think that line is really strong and allows the reader to imagine a time where they may have experienced something similar making them think about how something could have happened or something they could I have done. Brilliant wording! I think this poem is really impactful and allows it’s readers to think about the value of family and how important it is. Thank you for writing this, I loved it!

  37. Ashlen on March 30, 2021 at 7:08 PM

LM – I really enjoyed your poem! Family definitely has its ups and downs, but that doesn’t change that they are still family. Your poem is really expressive and heartfelt, and you capture how dynamic family can be. I can tell that you have a lot of love in your heart. Please keep writing and sharing that love!

  38. Maddie on March 31, 2021 at 1:23 PM

LM, thank you for sharing such positive sentiments about family. I agree with your ideas about how important family can be and how easy it can be to take our families for granted. I hope your family knows how much they mean to you, and I hope that others who read your poem take time to reflect on what their family members mean to them, too.

I think this poem is really important and love how it emphasizes the strength of family!

  40. Ashley Steele on April 2, 2021 at 6:28 PM

This is such a lovely, heartfelt poem.

I actually recently lost a grandfather which is what originally pulled me to this poem. The first couple of lines are really great: “Never take them for granted / They can be here today and gone tomorrow”

I had no idea that my last time with my grandfather was going to be our last time. You really perfectly captured that in your poem here.

I can feel the emotion and the passion behind every single line. I really like your repetition of the word “family” because you really emphasize what the message is here: family is forever, no matter the ups and downs. It’s so lovely to see you cherish your family and the memories you share with them.

Thank you for sharing this piece with us – it’s something that I think everyone can relate to, whether it be in terms of their family, their chosen family, or their friends.

    Best,
    A

I really like the message behind your poem, though it seems so simple it is really important and something we always forget. I unfortunately lost my grandmother from covid and I wish that I had never taken her love and kindness for granted. I will always have my memories of her but just as you said family is truly all we have and we can never forget that.

    LM,
I really loved your poem. It made me reflect on my family and how I had a lack of communication with them last year when I was 9 hours away for school. The line “Never take them for granted” is a strong opening because it allows the reader to sit back and think about their experiences with their family. It forces them to realize how they can grow closer to their relatives. Beautiful work!

  46. Lauren on April 6, 2021 at 10:31 PM

I really enjoyed this poem. I tend to take family for granted sometimes and this is a great reminder. No matter what we go through, we are always family and that bond cannot be broken. I particularly like the last four lines where you describe how family is all we have. When everything else is gone, our families are the one constant.

    LM,

This was extremely touching, and made me quite emotional. You are so right, never take your family or loved ones for granted, I have done that before and it ached me so bad, I cannot even imagine being in your position. When you get a chance, I feel you should read this to a loved one of choice, this would mean the world to them, I can promise you. Your words spoke volumes, thank you so much for sharing.

Hello, I loved the theme about family and connecting with them before it is too late. I think often times we get upset and say or do something we don’t mean, but at the end of the they are our family. It is never too late to give or receive forgiveness when it comes to family. I hope that in your own way you are still connected with your family.

    LM,
I found your writing extremely powerful. I can feel the rhythm of the poem when I read it aloud, and it flows incredibly. 52. Maria Griffin on April 12, 2021 at 10:21 AM

    LM,
My name is Maria Griffin, and I am a second-year student at Wayne State University in Detroit. This semester, I am taking a class whose goal is to engage with the community, beyond the university and corporations.
Your poem, Family, is one that hits close to home. Family is often taken for granted but can be taken in a second. Ups and downs bring us closer together. No matter how hard the downs are, they will always be your family. Your poem is a great representation of our built-in best friends we call mom, dad, sister, brother, etc. It also signifies loss and love, both opposite but immense feelings we feel when it comes to family. However, I think it is powerful to note: if it weren’t for the incredible and unconditional love a family has for each other, then the tragic feeling of loss would not be.
I think your poem encompasses the idea that without love there is no loss, and family is family no matter what. Great job, LM! Your work is very powerful and descriptive! Keep up the good work!

  55. E on April 14, 2021 at 11:54 PM

First I would like to start off by saying, what a beautiful flow. Though the time you had spent away from your family, it is amazing to see that connection is still there. Your poem represents the way a family should always be, together and always there. We may have ups and downs but nothing is thicker than blood! It is also amazing to see the true emotions and feelings you hold towards them. Keep up the great work LM!

I appreciate daily reminders like this that bring me back to the realization of just how important the people in my life are. Too many of us take our relationships for granted and it’s so easy to forget to let someone know their worth to you when we live in such a chaotic, fast paced world.

Hello, this was a fantastic poem that encapsulates how life can be so harsh and cutthroat. The idea that the people we love will not be here one day is daunting to think. Developing the gratitude for life and family from an early age will keep you humbled to be alive.

    Family by LM
I absolutely loved this poem, the intro completely grabbed my attention and I truly internalized the message. This poem exposed the rawness a family can have which includes the disappointing moments and I appreciated that. Although losing a loved one is one of the most difficult things in the world, it reminds you to be grateful for the ones still in your life. There was also a constant reminder of the most important thing and that is the people that come before anything. This was a beautiful reminder to cherish your loved ones and I believe we all forget that at times in our life, especially when times are hard.

  63. Sachi Amin on April 25, 2021 at 1:14 PM

Thank you for reminding us all how important it is to cherish moments with our families. Your poem made me stop and think about how grateful I am for the ups and downs we’ve experienced throughout the years, because those situations only made our bond stronger. Although we have our moments where we may not see eye to eye, we are always there for each other in the end. Family truly is all we have and this was the perfect reminder to never take them for granted.

When I discovered Free Minds I was immediately thrilled to see the connections build around your writings and heart, and what you have to offer is a powerful and beautiful gift to the community. Keep engaging with the community and making your voice heard. You bring healing, hope, and renewal of mind to many who have the privilege to share in your poetry. I love your poem so much and deeply, deeply affiliate with your love and gratitude for your family. Family is the most underappreciated and overlooked value to our lives, at times, but they are the only people in the world who know us and stick by us. Friends come and go, people unfortunately get divorces from their spouses, and old childhood friends grow up and move away. But family, will always be a part of us, the good and ugly, the wonderful and the division, the love and the pain. You are so right in saying to never take them for granted. It gives me a whole new mind frame on my day to day interactions with my siblings and my parents, and how I want to treat them. I want to honor them at the priceless level they are. Thank you more than you know for your challenge to me.

    Hey LM,

Your poem is nothing but straight facts! I love your emphasis on family being there when you need them in the last few lines. Like any other relationship you and your kinfolks will definitely have some ups and down; but as you said family is truly important and we should never think twice about that. I feel like it’s poems like yours that encourage people to talk to family members they haven’t connected with for who knows how long. Thank you.

    Hi LM,
I love your poem. You did a great job of making this poem and describing how important family is. It is always important to say your “I love you” and give many hugs because you truly don’t know when it could be for the last time. I love how you incorporated that fighting and arguing with your family is often normal because it is. There are always many disagreements and it is important that you use good communication to make up with each other. Family is family. Keep up the great work! I love reading poems like this. It is very relatable and understandable.

Sometimes it is easy to get annoyed and angry with family. You may not always see eye to eye. But you are right. They are there for you when others may not be. They helped make me who I am and strive to be. You did a great job of putting those thoughts down beautifully!

    LM,

This poem emphasizes the importance of my own family to myself. As I move on to different stages of my life, I am reminded by you that I should never take my family for granted. Family are the people who will not look at you judgmentally and who will never run out of love for you. You remind me that maybe I should take some time to call my mother, father, and brother and tell them that I am thankful for them.

    Thank you.

I love how you connect your readers with knowing the importance of family. Having a big family I could relate to your poem in many ways . With the things going on around us today your poem is very heart feeling because a lot of people of losing people they never got a chance to talk out situations with and it eats them up inside because they didn’t remember the importance of family . Thanks so much for this poem it open my perspective on forgiving family.

This spoke to me in many different ways, since my family is so important to me. I didn’t realize how important they were until I left for college and constantly needed them, and guess what… they were there for me! Your poem is very relatable and I think we can all lose sight of the fact that we need people. We need help sometimes and our family is there to do that. Thank you for sharing this and just reminding me again how lucky I am to have such wonderful people in my life! I wish you the best of luck and hope to read another poem of yours!

This poem really touched me. Your poem tells me how family is very important and it should be important to us. It is easy to get annoyed and want to get away from family. However; your poem taught me to appreciate my family more since they are the ones that are always there for me.

    Dear LM,

Thank you for sharing your poem. Family is such an important topic for me, I love my family and your poem resonates with me emotionally. It is important to realize that we sometimes take our family for granted. Your poem was written so well and beautifully.

    Hi LM,
I completely agree with everything you stated in your poem. Family should always come first after yourself because they will always be there for you no matter what. Sometimes we take them for granted because they are always there, but you should always be grateful for them. Great poem!

Your poetry was fantastic! Family has its ups and downs, but it does not affect the fact that they are still related. Your poetry is really passionate and emotional, and it perfectly captures the dynamic nature of family. We often have difficulty connecting with our family, and writing about your personal experience might make others feel less isolated. This poem was really inspiring.

    Dear LM,

Thank you for this! I’ve been finding that there are days when I feel like I’m too busy to reach out to my family, but I sometimes need to remind myself that keeping in contact with them and checking in with them periodically is important, because at the end of the day they are “all I have.” Your poem is so beautifully written.

Hi LM. I am a student in a class that seeks to engage with communities. I read your poem and felt personal feelings of guilt and remorse to my family members. I was not always the best towards them. I only say this because your writing really struck at the value of being with a family. That to me is priceless. It took me a while of outside pondering but you really encouraged me to reconnect with my parents more. I now talk to my mom on a daily basis, because I am going to miss the day where I can no longer see her. I just want to say thank you for your encouraging wisdom. You really helped a brother out.

Thank you for creating a poem that so successfully captures the importance of family. My family isn’t perfect, but I know I can count on them to be be there for me when I need to. Your poem both made me miss family members who I have lost, but also acted as a reminder to appreciate those who I still have with me. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

Family is so important because they are the ones there when no one else is! I agree that we do lose sight of that sometimes and it is important to change that before it is too late! Thanks for sharing LM!

    Hey LM,

I wanted to first off and say that this was a really good poem that managed to speak to me on a personal note. Though I love my family and cherish every moment with them I feel that I have started to take their existence for granted. As of late, I haven’t reached out to them as much as I used to when I was younger, nor pick up the phone with the same drive and excitement. Reading your poem made me realize this, that I’ve been too distant, and that I should contact them more often. Thank you for sharing your work and reminding me what matters most. Great Job!

  89. Grace on April 28, 2022 at 3:17 PM

    Dear LM,

Thank you for creating this poem that myself and others have had the opportunity to read. Your poem specifically caught my attention because of your topic of family. What seems like a simple thought can bring about many different realizations. I enjoyed when you talked about the “’I wish I would have moments.’” I believe these are thoughts you will never be able to escape and will never truly forgive yourself for. If you let these moments hinder your relationships with your family, they may be gone before you have the chance= to connect with them. This was a really powerful message to me because I am super close with my family, but I easily take them and my time with them for granted. I appreciated how your poem offered a message that can be taken by everyone. Our family is people who we should have by our sides through everything. You make an important point when you talk about how even the ups and downs will not separate you from them. Thank you for giving such an important reminder to keep our family close to us. Your poem offered an admirable message.

  90. Chloe on April 28, 2022 at 3:18 PM

    LM,

Each line of your poem was phrased beautifully, and it flowed well together. Your first line, “never take them for granted,” particularly caught my attention. This poem was a good reminder that family is the most important thing and should be cherished more deeply. It resonated with me how you described family, “there will always be a constant lack of communication, but you’ll always be family.” Overall, this poem was well written, and readers can easily connect with your opinions about family; it is clear how important family is to you. Being from a large family, I enjoyed reading this poem because it reminded me that I need to be grateful for my siblings and I am extremely lucky to have each one of them still involved in my life in some way.

    LM,
this is a really great poem on how we should treasure those we consider family and spend more time with them. This is very relevant for myself right now because over the last 6 months I have had 3 deaths in my family. It is so hard to deal with and definitely brings family closer together because we are reminded of how fragile human life is. Family is truly all we have at the end of the day and I appreciate you reminding me of this today.

    Dear LM,
what a lovely poem. I strongly agree with your line “There will always be a constant lack of communication But you’ll always be family” as even though families disagree and argue at times, at the end of the day, the love we have for each other is beyond everything, its unconditional.
Your poem also made me reflect on how valuable family truly is. Family members provide us with so much love, teachings and wisdom that help us to become the greatest version of ourselves we can be. Further, Ive been with my family my whole life but next year I will be moving away to another country to go to college. Your poem has reminded me once again that I must value and cherish them as much as I can before I leave.

Great and moving poem, keep it up!

  94. Anna Carpentiere on September 28, 2022 at 10:02 AM

This poem is very emotional and relieving to read. I and many people take their family and friends for granted. You never know when that might be the last time you see someone you love. There are many “I wish I would have” moments in my life. I agree it’s important to enjoy the quality time you have with loved ones. Life is not perfect there will always be ups and downs; even the most perfect family has issues. Family should always be there for you and if they are not your friends should be. You got this and remember the best is yet to come!

  95. Cassidy on October 10, 2022 at 4:27 PM

    Hi LM,

This poem is very beautiful. I enjoyed reading it because your outlook on family is not sugarcoated and is very realistic. Family is not always perfect, but they will always be here for you, no matter what. I enjoyed your comment about not taking family for granted, and that it is important to cherish the memories, as you mentioned. As we all know, there are ups and downs with family, ons and offs, and times when we are disconnected. I appreciated your realness about family, but regardless of what might be going on, you drive home the fact that family is all we have. Your piece made me reflect on some of my personal relationships with my family. Thank you for writing such a strong piece!

    Best,

  96. Jill on October 16, 2022 at 5:51 PM

I really like how this poem reflects the meaning of family and how important it is. Family to me has always been my number #1 no matter what even though there are good day and bad days. Being in college, communication has been limited because I do not see them everyday but that is what makes us stronger because we find other ways to connect even if it not in person. The line that stood out to me the most was “It may be too late for the “I wish I would have” moments”. This resonated with me because I always worry about not doing enough for the people around me so I always overcompensate so I don’t feel like I “could’ve done more” later on in life. Overall, great job and keep up the beautiful work!

  97. Anna on October 30, 2022 at 7:08 PM

LM, thank you so much for sharing this poem! It is so so important to remember this and not everyone does all the time. Life is crazy and someone can be gone in a second. Like you said, make sure to cherish your time with anyone important to you because you never know what will happen.

  98. Kayla on November 16, 2022 at 1:01 PM

This is a beautiful poem. It reminded of me and my mom relationship. Our relationship us very rocky because of her drinking problem. She turns into a completely different person and sometimes I think of dropping her, but then this poem reminded me that she’s been trying to get better and when she’s sober she’s an amazing mother. She has some demons but don’t we all? If I didn’t have her in my life I don’t know where I’d be today. I already lost one parent, I don’t want to lose another parent. We are always there for each other no matter what and that’s what family is all about. Thank you for this.

This poem is very true and I love the reminder that it gives me about family. At the end of the day your family has your back and doesn’t fail you. The line that hits me the most is “Never take them for granted they can be here today and gone tomorrow.” It is very sad to think of a life without family, and I highly respect everyone who lives their life without family. Great job on this poem, it is very professional!

  100. Jon on December 7, 2022 at 3:32 PM

Dear LM, I relate to your poem so much. I know we’ve had different experiences, but I have lived and experienced your poem “Family.” I’ve gone through many deaths to cancer in my life at a young age, not understanding what happened or the impact it had on me till later in life and I’m only 19. While reading your poem, I would catch myself saying, “Yep, that’s true” or “Couldn’t have said it better” because I’ve experienced the loss and the grief of losing family. You’ve said it how it is. You have perfectly conveyed the importance of family, and how we need them. One thing that stood out to me was how you didn’t romanticize families being perfect and included negative statements about families then beginning the next line with “But.” Another thing that stood out to me was “Cherish them while you can” because it made me think about my own grief. I regret not spending more time with my grandpa, and I’ve told others what you said in your poem, “Never take them for granted They can be here today and gone tomorrow” I know it takes a lot of courage to come out with a poem like this and I respect you.
    Best wishes,

Family is everything and sometimes we take that for granted until it’s too late. This poem was a beautiful reminder to be kind to the ones we love. You explained it perfectly “They can be here today and gone tomorrow.” Thank you for reminding us just how important it is to cherish the ones we have today. This was written with love and so much power. Thank you for sharing such a true piece of work. Keep writing!

    Hi LM,
I really enjoyed reading your simple but relatable poem. We all have a family, whether it’s blood or not, and we go through ups and downs with them. However, they are so important. I liked how you emphasized the importance of always being grateful for them. As a busy college student, it’s hard to find time to continue to reach out to my family. But, you have opened my eyes to not take my family for granted, so I will work harder to keep my family close. Thank you for sharing your powerful message.

  103. Grace on February 13, 2023 at 1:24 PM

Hi there! Reading this poem truly impacted me. As someone who has struggled with her mental health in the past, I always find myself looking back to the moments where I was less than kind to my family because I was fighting my own battles internally and regretting them. I’ve lost count of the times where I’ve wished I could go back and do things differently, but I’m proud that I’ve come to realize that like this poem states, family is always there for you. I can’t imagine how isolating it feels when you are incarcerated, but from this poem, it sounds like you have people that have been there for you and that will always be there for you. A support system is so important to have in every aspect of our lives, especially when it comes to our mental health. This poem was a great reminder for me personally, because as a college student who goes to school out of state, it’s extremely easy to become distant, and this makes me want to definitely put in more time and effort to see and call my family. Thank you.

    Hi LM,

    Fantastic poem.

Thank you for reminding us to appreciate and cherish our family members while they are still in our lives. I like how you emphasize the fragility of life and how quickly things can change, emphasizing the importance of not taking our loved ones for granted.

I like how you repeated the phrase “family is” throughout the poem. It really emphasizes and reinforces your poem’s central theme. Your use of contrasts, such as “here today, gone tomorrow” and “missing in action” versus “there when you need them,” also contributes to the poem’s tension and emotional depth.

Our family may not always be perfect, but having them is better than being alone, and we should learn to appreciate the good times.

  105. Kearsten on March 6, 2023 at 8:30 PM

This poem genuinely made me cry. The descriptions of the way family is and how they are connected is beautiful. In the line “They could be here today and gone tomorrow” I felt it to my very core, as I recently lost a loved one and I was reminded of how precious life is and how much I needed my family in that moment. Thank you for sharing these powerful words. Wishing you the best.

  106. PH on March 23, 2023 at 11:50 AM

Yes we can never take family for granted because we don’t know how lucky we have it. They can be here today and gone tomorrow in a blink of an eye. It’s so beautiful when you say there will always be a constant lack of communication but you’ll always be family. It’s just amazing how every family has their ups and downs but that brings the family closer together. Yes, family will always be there when you need them even when they’re missing in action. Something hints at us and reminds us that we need family.

  107. Oshane on April 11, 2023 at 10:33 PM

    Hi LM,

Thank you for reminding us how important it is to cherish our families. I agree that we all face challenges at times with family, but it keeps us grounded. Great way to convey the value of family and the idea that we should cherish our loved ones while we still have them.

  108. Paige Robinson on April 13, 2023 at 9:41 PM

The lines “Never take them for granted / They can be here today and gone tomorrow / It may be too late for the ‘I wish I would have’ moments / Cherish them while you can” capture the fragility of life and the need to appreciate those around us while we have the chance. I have experienced very unexpected loss in my life and wishing the for the moments I could have had is a daily reminder to cherish those I do have. Your poem is a beautiful reflection on the importance of family and the need to appreciate and cherish those we love while we have the chance. It is a reminder to never take our loved ones for granted and to always keep them close to our hearts. Thank you for sharing your beautiful words.
