1,000 Reasons

To care, it’s 1,000 reasons.
1,000 ways to feel within the 4 seasons.
To go on. To continue. To strive.
Innumerable are the reasons to be alive.
With the passing of the time, is a reason.
With the countless dying, is a reason.
1,000 trees is a reason to breathe.
1,000 trees is a reason to read.
1,000 potential “fall in loves”
Is 1,000 potential babies to breed.
Yearly missile simulations, is a reason.
A reason to act.
For 1,000 moments lived,
Are ones you can’t get back.
To convince the quitters, the ones giving up,
I have 1,000 pulls to lift their heads up.
1,000 reasons to believe in one thing,
is 1,000 reasons not to doubt.
1,000 unanswered things for each,
is 1,000 reasons to figure out.
Ignorance is a reason to learn.
Ambition, Dreams. Goals.
All reasons to yearn.
Hatred is a reason to love.
For, with every 1,000 wounded,
Should warrant 1,000 hugged.

  1. I love this part:

Yearly missile simulations, is a reason.
    A reason to act.

  2. Within the poem you can feel the emotion and the melody the writer is invoking.
Through rhyme and imagery this poem takes me into deep thought. I admire the writer because if he can find reason while incarcerated then why shouldn’t we appreciate the beautiful life we get to take part in. This poem is something many should have the opportunity to read and understand. My understanding is that even thing has a reason and we have to look at it in a positive way. Great job!!!!

  3. Sadie Davis says:

    Dear DC,
Your poem is full of inspiration and hope, something we need more of today. Thank you!!! I wanted it to go on longer, to read more of the reasons- I hope that you will maintain your writing habit and share your optimism with us. Your words are powerful and I thank you for sharing. Many of us are thinking of you- of the many people in prison- and hoping that you all will find peace of mind as we slowly struggle to make our country’s justice system more just. We are with you in spirit. I hope to read more of your poetry soon.
