The Root Of All Evil

By: SW

Money is the root of all evil, like it’s grown from hell
Money can change a person, like life is for sell
People live for money, that’s why so many lives are thrown away
Some blame television; I just say money is modern day
Labor, sweat, blood, death, and tears all for the paper
We do so much for the color green, but not even half for our maker
Man made money, high authority makes law
Humans judge our life, in which they never saw
So before you judge me, I want you to judge yourself
We are all in our position today all because of wealth

Evil is such a constant theme in history and a prevailing story on the nightly news. I agree with you, SW, that evil and money can be one in the same. I think that money, an excess of money in particular, can personify and exaggerate that “evil” that I believe is in all of us, dormant or not. When someone has a lot of money, it can give them the means to not listen to their conscience, and to ignore what they know is the right thing to do. Money encourages some folks to set aside their humanity and to value material things over people – certainly a constant theme throughout history and today’s world.

What do you think would be the first step(s) needed for this value system to change?

A very enlightening poem. When you think about it, it does seem like all of our actions are caused by money. If the world would be a better place if people didn’t act that way, can you think of any way a person could not have all of his actions caused by money?

I really like your use of different terms for money and how each term created a different image, because money really is everywhere in different kinds of situation and creates a better image of that specific situation.

Your description of being judged in an earthly, human way, when there is a higher power with a better understanding is extremely powerful. It would be easy for you to talk about this in a very personal way, but the way that you apply it to all people and all judgement makes it all the more understandable with a big impact.
