My Life Is Like…

By CM

My life is like a chair with no legs
Or equal to a body with no head
Crying baby just wants to be fed
Go ahead, Slim, and jump off that edge
Ever tried walking on raw eggs?
It’s like living in your bedroom with no bed
Or waking up and your whole family is dead
That’s the moment we all dread
You didn’t care when you was serving that basehead
Just think about your life and what really lies ahead

CM, this poem *really* moved me. It honestly broke my heart. I love the everyday physical objects you used (for example, chair, body, baby, bed) to say such a deep message. There is rhythm and vibrancy in each line… it’s incredible. Thank you for writing and sharing this. I hope to read more of your poetry. Keep writing!

I love the imagery you use to express your feelings. You depict such obscure scenes and incorporate them so well into your poem.

    CM,
I have come across this poem as part of a college course aimed at community engagement.
Your poem is so captivating! There are so many interesting metaphors in it! With every line you poem gets darker and darker, filled with more dread. I think you encapsulate so many emotions in the poem, even though you only eighty-one words. My greatest hope is that you’ve found light away from the darkness, possibly through your writing. Ending this poem with “looking ahead” is, hopefully, symbolic that you have started to do so.You’re very talented! I feel very lucky to have read this! Thank you for sharing this poem with the world!

I am a student in a community service course at Wayne State in Detroit whose goal is to engage with the community beyond the university. When I discovered Free Minds I was immediately thrilled to see the connections build around your writings and heart, and what you have to offer is a powerful and beautiful gift to the community. It was a true privilege getting the opportunity to read what is on your heart and mind, your desires and passions, thoughts, and struggles. You have so much to say, so much wisdom to give, and such deep experiences and desires to share with the community that people from all walks of life, backgrounds, beliefs, and ages can deeply connect with and affiliate with. Keep engaging with the community and making your voice heard. You bring healing, hope, and renewal of mind to many who have the privilege to share in your poetry. I thought it really unique how you utilized incomplete things like a chair with no legs, body with no head, or a crying, hungry baby to describe your life at this point. Your honesty and rawness is what makes this poem so powerful and lends itself to your artistry. Thank you for this vision you gave us, I hope you keep pursuing writing.

Hello CM, thanks for sharing your poem, the use of physical objects that are used as a metaphor to signify the daily struggles of life was very powerful.
