Lessons in Courage and Fear
By TH
This poem was written in response to a writing prompt from the Pongo Poetry Project.
In my life I have known courage–in facing against all odds
Nowadays courage is felt, but seldom seen
I’ve learned courage from trial and error
What courage tells me is you never know how much you have until you need it
Usually I listen to what my heart tells me
I wish more people would show courage against all injustices

This poem feels like a journal entry or a conversation with a trusted friend. The realness of the poem gives it power. The beginning is incredibly strong. It definitely sets the tone for the rest of the poem. “Nowadays courage is felt, but seldom seen” an amazing observation of today’s society hinting at the shift in that people feel for things emotionally, but fear acting on those emotions. This poem shows that you have lived courage not just felt courage making it more compelling.
This is an incredibly meaningful poem. Highlighting that courage is seldom seen, but instead felt is so important to acknowledge. You are right in saying that people should show more courage against injustices. I too wish that people were stronger to stand up for other individuals. This is an impactful poem that will take you far.
I agree that courage often remains hidden until it’s called upon in moments of need. It’s important to not only feel it, but to act on it, especially when confronting injustice and standing up for what’s right.
Courage is something so important to many people. You can use so much courage in your life.

This poem thoughtfully explores the quiet strength of courage through personal experience and reflection. The line “you never know how much you have until you need it”* powerfully captures the hidden depth of resilience. It would be even more impactful with a bit more imagery or specific examples to ground the abstract ideas.
Your poem shines with quiet strength, showing that true courage is often found in the small, unseen moments. By writing with such honesty and heart, you inspire others to find their own bravery and stand against injustice.
Your words show a powerful strength that can’t be taken from you—your courage is real, and it matters. Keep listening to your heart; even in the darkest places, your light can inspire others.
Thank you for sharing this powerful and reflective poem. You do a beautiful job of exploring the idea of courage, not as something abstract, but as something deeply personal and real. I especially appreciate the line “You never know how much you have until you need it,” which captures a truth that many people can relate to. The structure feels like a natural flow of thought, almost like a journal entry, which adds authenticity and vulnerability to your message.
One suggestion might be to consider building on some of your key lines with imagery or a personal moment that illustrates your experience. For example, when you say “I’ve learned courage from trial and error,” adding a short, specific example could make the message even more impactful and help the reader feel more connected to your story.
Overall, your poem is strong and honest, and this piece carries an important message. Keep writing your words matter.
I like how this comments on the fact that it’s more valuable to express how you feel about something rather than keeping it to yourself.
Hi TH! Thank you for sharing this poem. Courage isn’t loud and flashy, but rather, it is something we come to understand through struggle. The line where you said you don’t know how much courage you have until you really need it stood out to me because it is so real. It reminds me that sometimes we surprise ourselves with how strong we are, especially when life tests us. Keep up the good work!

this is great! i really enjoyed reading this! i can tell you worked hard on this because you are absolutely right. this world needs courage and i’m proud of you for your courage to write something that calls people to action. keep going! you’re doing great!
I liked your poem. I agree with you that courage isn’t just a feeling it’s an action. It is true that you never know how much courage you have until you find a reason to summon it, and that sometimes you can’t and that the fear is overwhelming. Courage seems to be easier in groups — standing alone, it’s much harder.
This is so beautiful especially because it is so important. In today’s world where we see injustice everywhere and hatred runs rampant we really need to have a little more courage to stand up for what is right. The line in the poem that courage is felt but rarely seen really resonates with me and with the current situation. People are comfortable enough to say something is wrong or agree with what they see online but when the time comes to speak out and make change in order to face this injustice we shrink away. The poem perfectly encapsulates this situation which we need to get away from in order to safeguard our futures.

I can truly relate to this. having courage in such trying times and using this courage to fight the injustices of the world is so important.
Good reminders for all of us to think about. Great perspective and outlook to have. Stay strong you have the strength and courage to come out of this stronger. Thinking of you and sending healing thoughts.
This poem thoughtfully highlights how courage goes unseen but is essential in times of need. The line “you never know how much you have until you need it is particularly impactful, and the call for more courage against injustice adds depth.
There’s a strong message in ‘courage is felt, but seldom seen.’ It makes me curious—what do you think has changed in society to make that the case?
TH, This poem speaks with quiet strength and a sense of lived wisdom. The way you reflect on courage—not as a loud, flashy act, but as something built through “trial and error”—is powerful and true. You remind us that courage isn’t always about dramatic moments; often, it’s about the quiet choices we make in difficult times, the kind that shape us when no one’s watching.
The line “you never know how much you have until you need it” especially stood out. It captures the essence of inner strength—how it’s often discovered in the middle of hardship, not before. That makes your message relatable and grounded in real experience.
I also appreciate how you end with a call for others to show courage, especially “against all injustices.” It turns the poem from reflection into a gentle challenge to the reader—to not just admire courage, but to live it.
If anything, I’d love to see even more personal examples or specific moments where courage showed up in your life—doing so could deepen the emotional connection even further.
Your words carry weight. Keep writing and sharing your truth—it’s exactly the kind of voice the world needs to hear more of.

I love how this poem treats courage as both a lesson and a presence. The line “you never know how much you have until you need it” hits hard, so true in life and struggle.
This poem is amazing! It really resonates with me and shows how much and how little courage people have regarding particular issues. I like the message you left at the end, expressing your wish that more people would show courage against all injustices as it shows the partiality towards what people show courage towards and what they don’t. I also like how you gave your own personal experience, by starting off with how you have known courage, by facing against all odds. This poem, overall, leaves a strong message and I really enjoyed reading this!
This is such an interesting perspective! 🙂
Hi TH,
Wow, this poem is really profound. Courage is so powerful but can feel so intangible at times, and I think this poem does a great job of reflecting that. The encampment at the end also emphasizes a new component, injustice.
Great poem 🙂
This poem is both reflective of the writer’s personal battles, as well as a call to action. I deeply appreciate the message that courage is not about being fearless but instead lies in listening to what your heart tells you and standing up for what’s right, even when it’s hard or you’re alone. The courage to support loudly and proudly what you know is right, is a strength that few people have today. I applaud this writer’s ability to be seen and felt, continue expressing yourself.
I enjoyed reading this poem. You captured the true meaning of courage and the need for it in today’s world. Just because people are not put in challenging situations themselves doesn’t mean they shouldn’t use the courage inside of them to help others.
Great poem TH. My favorite line is how you never know how much courage you have til you need it. So true. We all could dig deep. Thanks for sharing and please keep writing!

I really like how personal this feels—it shows courage as something we don’t always realize we have until we need it. The line about listening to your heart stood out to me. That ending wish is powerful too, makes you think about how much better the world would be if more people acted with courage.
ur words remind me that courage isn’t just about grand gestures—it’s also in the quiet choices we make every day. Sometimes courage is invisible, carried in silence, yet it shapes who we are when the world tests us most. Like you, I believe it grows in us when we least expect it, and that it shines brightest when faced with injustice. Thank you for sharing this—it’s a reminder that courage, though rare to see, is always worth striving to live.
I really connected with the message of this poem. The way you describe courage as something you do not realize you have until you need it feels very true and relatable. I like how you tied it to both personal experience and a broader wish for people to stand up against injustice. It makes the poem feel both personal and universal. The ending especially leaves a strong impression, calling for courage in the world around us.
This feels personal and universal—like a quiet reflection and a call to action. I like how it shows courage as something discovered in the moment, not something you know you have until life demands it. The ending especially stands out—it shifts from the self to the world, urging others to live with the same bravery against injustice. Simple, but really powerful.
I like how this piece defines courage not as abstract, but as something tested in real life. The shift from personal experience to a call for others to show courage against injustice makes it both reflective and motivating.

What a strong message! “Nowadays courage is felt, but seldom seen”. No one talks about the immense internal battle that someone goes through when forced to be courageous. In this day we all need more people to speak out against injustice. In our polarizing world the difference of one voice can shift the tides, and your words speak volumes.
This poem resonates with me due to how we must persevere through our fears and exhibit courage. “courage from trial and error” means to me that you learn courage over time, like any other skill. This poem also calls out people who do not display acts of courage and let misconduct go on. I feel like that line is very prominent in this day and age. Most people are afraid to call out injustice, they lack courage. Overall, I enjoyed reading this poem!
This poem really speaks to how courage shows up when we least expect it. I like how you describe it as something we only realize we have when we need it. The ending line about standing up against injustice ties it all together in such a meaningful way.
This poem is concise and thought provoking, touching on themes of personal growth, resilience, and the importance of standing up for what is right. The person acknowledges their own experiences with courage, highlighting its presence in facing challenges. The poem contrasts the past with the present, noting that courage is now “seldom seen.”
This poem shows a harsh reality, that being that courage has weakened and that it is a brutal process to gain it. Though it is also true that you don’t know how much courage you have until you really need it. But even with that said, it is very true that you have to try time and time again to develop courage.
What a great poem! Courage is something that all people should have and feel. Its a sense of hope and a desire to make change. Its stepping outside of the boundaries and maybe trying something new! This poem shows the feeling of courage and the impact it can make on someones life.
This is amazing! We all have times where we need to have courage. I agree with what you said that we need to go through something to see how much courage we have. All in all this is amazing and something so many others have to deal with on a daily basis. I’m praying for you!
I like how this defines courage through experience instead of just describing it. The line “you never know how much you have until you need it” really sums it up perfectly.
That’s a beautiful and thoughtful poem – it carries a quiet strength and sincerity. It reads like a personal reflection on the meaning of courage, both in your own life and in the world around you.
Courage isn’t loud — most of the time it’s quiet, and it only shows up when life really demands it. I like how you connect courage to the heart instead of ego. That last line hits… because we really do need more of that kind of courage in the world right now.

This is so beautifully written out and such a great perspective. Keep sharing your voice!😌
What I love about this poem is not just how you share your reflections and experiences, but also how you call on the readers to also evaluate their life and actions in this sense.
I loved your poem! It was so inspiring and radiated hope. I really felt moved as you picked up on an insight that is not often spoken about in society: courage is felt but we rarely see it in others as it is hidden. I loved this message as it has spurred me to think about my own courage and how often I show it to others through standing up for justice. I will be sure to think about this idea and notice and encourage more courage in my daily life! Well done, keep writing!
The personal reflection makes courage feel lived-in rather than abstract, and the closing wish gives the poem a quiet but meaningful call to stand up against injustice.
I like how this poem talks about courage in such a simple and honest way. The line about not knowing how much courage you have until you actually need it really stood out to me — that feels very true to life. It doesn’t feel overdone or dramatic, just real and reflective. The ending also feels meaningful, especially the call for more people to stand up against injustice. It’s short, but it definitely leaves an impact.
Hello,
You really do show courage in this poem. Anything can be Courageous depending on the person. I feel like you are being really truthful in this poem and that you are a very honest person. It probably even took a lot of courage to even write this poem. Overall I would say this is fantastic.
Your poem gave me a small reality check on what I need to improve on. Courage is definitely something that I lack, I’m offend to afraid to stand up for myself, or to strive for something I desire. maybe I’m scared I will fail or that I will not be able to live up to everyone’s standers, or even my own standers. I’m glad you’re able to find courage in you, and I hope I can find it in myself too.
This poem has a gentle, honest strength to it. It shows courage as something learned through real life, not something flashy. I like how it reminds us that we often don’t know our own strength until we’re tested.
This poem has such a calm strength to it. I really like how you describe courage as something learned through experience, not something loud or showy. The line about not knowing how much courage you have until you need it feels especially true. Your wish for more people to stand up against injustice gives the poem a powerful, hopeful ending
I like in this poem how you said you learned courage And how other peoples should have more courage when the time comes. It takes time to learn courage especially with events. I believe that people will stand up for injustices once they learn courage as well. Overall this is a good poem.
This poem is amazing and really opens your eyes to new perspectives. Many believe that courage is something you are born with; however, your idea that courage is learned and discovered is very inspiring. It opens your eyes to new possibilities and allows you to challenge yourself with things you might’ve been too fearful to face in the past. The simplistic language in the poem also conveys a sense of realness and authenticity that is often difficult to take away. Overall, very good job.
This poem presents courage as something deeply personal and learned through lived experience rather than just an abstract idea. It contrasts the past and present to suggest that while courage still exists, it isn’t always visibly acted upon. The ending shifts into a quiet call to action, encouraging others to embody courage more openly, especially in the face of injustice.
Your poem is excellent; it shows how life experiences can teach us. Courage and speaking up against injustice are very important, especially in today’s world. Your diction throughout the poem creates a sense of security in unknowing; phrases like “trial and error” show how learning is possible and almost necessary to become who you want to be.

You’ve done a great job using language, paradox, and tone to define a really complex concept through personal experience. The line “Courage is felt, but seldom seen” is a great use of paradox that really makes the reader stop and think. I also liked the conversational and wise tone of the poem; it feels like you’re sharing a truth with the reader. Awesome job!
This is a beautifully written poem that shows quiet strength and courage. I particularly am touched by your final call for more people to stand against injustice, which really increases the emotional impact of the poem. Please continue writing!
