Emotions

By JS

Everyone has emotions, whether they are good or bad.
Sometimes we choose to hide them…
Is that good or bad?
We’re all humans and come from the same path.
Some goes left / others going right
But our emotions are all the same,
Some up or down or in between

Having feeling means you’re human and not a lame
Express how you feel and don’t feel ashamed
Always keep in mind that emotions cause pain
Let them all out to remain sane.

This hits home for me and I think for everyone else as well. We are always taught to be strong, unflinching, and stalwart in every scenario no matter what. Were taught to not let our emotions cloud our judgement and to never lose control. This is all well and good but I feel that it subconsciously makes us hide all of our emotions all the time. We have to vent these off in order to be healthy and to grow and to have better understanding of things. Sharing our emotions with our closest confidants and partners is one of the most important things that we can do and I wish you all the best in these endeavors.

I really enjoyed this poem, and I really found a lot of joy and consolation in it. I like that JS mentioned how emotions simply are; they are neither good nor bad. Whether they are good or bad depends on what we do with them. I think that this is a very wise and honest observation of the human condition. I also like how he points out emotions being a sign of our common humanity, which is a beautiful and wonderful thing.

I enjoyed the word choice that you used here. You used words that appealed to my emotions, which directly translated to the topic you chose to write about.

I really liked the rhyme scheme in the last stanza and the repetition of using the opposite words (good and bad, left and right, up or down)

    Dear JS,
Wow such a powerful piece of work. Nice flow and beautiful structure. I truly enjoyed reading this and related to it very much. Please keep working at it.

I really like the message behind this. This is something that my father and I talk about all the time, how emotions are neither good nor bad. That’s a really wise perspective to take. I think our society shames a lot of people into trying to escape those feelings labeled as bad. But you can’t run from them, it’s part of the human experience. I really appreciated reading this and hope you continue to write more. Writing is a gift.

I feel the same way like, i have troubles with my friends and i always hide how I feel because, i used to think that they would judge me for the way i feel.

I really love this poem. It’s very relatable and everything you said was accurate. Feelings are normal, and some are better than others and it’s good to awknowledge your feelings.

I really like “Some goes left / others going right”. I’ve never thought about that before but I think it’s true. This is a really good poem.

I really relate to hiding emotions because it always feels like people aren’t there for me and just want me to be there for them

Truer words never said, my friend. I wasn’t raised to share my feelings, so I appreciate your poem. If we bottle ourselves up, one day we’ll get too full and explode. We have to let it out. We gotta be heard. Thanks for the great work, JS. Keep sharing your words.

It’s true we all decide if we should be good or bad but everyone has a bit of good in them. Action can hurt but always remember that someone does love you. We all are humans that choose a path and no matter what path you take, you can always turn back and change your life.

  13. Korel Kobak on May 9, 2022 at 9:54 AM

I love how this poem understands that everyone is human. When we were talking about this, I thought about how everyone has emotions and is still a human. I feel like a lot of people don’t get that inmates are still human. I also like how you express emotion. You write about true feelings.

  14. Claire on May 9, 2022 at 3:11 PM

This poem was so good! I really felt it relatable in the fact that sometimes people hide their true feelings. I also found it in a way inspirational, because it made me feel like I’m similar to other people. We all have emotions, no matter what they are, or what we decide to do with them. This poem was amazing and I would love to read more from you!

  15. Grayson on May 9, 2022 at 3:12 PM

This poem is very good, it couldn’t be put in better words. We all have emotions and people hide them all the time and yes some chose to hide them like I do. People do that all the time because like you stated it can embarrass us sometimes which is ok not to show them because other people might make fun of you or me or anyone for having an emotion that is embarrassing. Your poem is very good I really like it keep up the good work and look forward to seeing some more poems from you in the future.

    Hi JS,

Wonderful poem and idea about emotions. They are an interesting concept, aren’t they? Some people have an easier way of showing them, others a harder. However one needs to express it or however one needs to feel should be able to feel it. It is also reassuring to know though, that there are others out there that may be feeling the same things you are at a given moment or have been in a similar situation. I think it’s also interesting how some emotions cannot live independently without another. For instance, without sadness or pain, we cannot measure and truly understand and feel happiness or relief. It is also interesting in the ways that we can express our emotions. It makes it kind of ironic that you wrote a poem about emotions in which it is such a powerful outlet just like any form of art to express yourself. Art does not always have to be concrete in that an apple is an apple, but can mean something completely different! Poems and art can just be how you feel in that moment.

    Hello Js
I really like your poem and it feels like when I sit in my room and I’m feeling down for the day I don’t know if I should hold it in or if I should cry because crying can be bad at least that’s what I’m told where I came from. but reading your palm and you saying that every person has emotions and letting them out will keep you sane make sense because bottling up your emotions only hurts you and just you.

  18. Liz on May 14, 2022 at 10:52 PM

I think the overall message of being human and having emotions is really brilliant! Often times emotions can make us feel like we’re weak but it’s important to remember it’s okay even is it’s being very vulnerable. I like the comment about being human and not a lame it’s a fun but straight to the point comment.

Reading this poem hit very differently for me; I am autistic and have trouble with emotions. I cannot read other people’s emotions and have learned to mimic reactions I have seen in the past. In January my sister passed way and the only way I could explain what I felt was lost. Even today, I feel lost. I am grieving but not knowing how to express what I feel is challenging. I with I could explain how I feel or what I am feeling but on the flip side from looking at how my other sisters are suffering, maybe not feeling that pain is not so bad? I am lost but I am telling people I feel lost so I guess, I am really expressing my feelings. Great Poem!

    JS,

Thank you for sharing this! We might go through different things, but we all have felt joy, anger, pain, and peace. This should help us sympathize with others better. Thank you for holding us accountable!

This poem is true and speaks to the heart. It’s okay to hide your emotions, but it’s important to also let people know when you are not okay. Hiding your emotions can be a bad thing because things start to pile up inside and finding a way to let them out is important. It’s better to create your own path than follow someone else’s. Just like hiking; you can create your own trail and it takes time and perseverance, but the end goal is much better. You will still get an outcome following the trail of others, but it’s not as deserving as creating your own. “Express how you feel and don’t feel ashamed. Always keep in mind that emotions cause pain.” These lines from this poem are important and true, but it’s okay to feel ashamed and thats your emotions causing pain. You got this and remember the best is yet to come!

  22. Annika on September 22, 2022 at 10:54 AM

I like how this poem puts an emphasis on the fact that having emotions and feeling some type of way is completely normal. Nowadays, especially with the younger generations, expressing feelings and emotions has some sort of stigma around it. You’ll be regarded as “weak” or “sensitive” when feeling something is just natural and part of who we are as humans.

  23. kayla on September 25, 2022 at 12:30 AM

i love this poem! i feel like i can really relate to the author about expressing different emotions. the overall message is very thought-provoking. Keep up the great work!

  24. Jill on September 25, 2022 at 3:29 PM

I think this poem is very straight to the point. As humans we all have emotions and some of us share them and some of us don’t. A lot of people feel like they have to keep their emotions instead and not show them because they do not want to come off as vulnerable to other people around them. When in reality, as you said, we all have these emotions whether they be good or bad. The line that stood out to me in this poem was “having feeling means you’re human and not a lame.” This is a beneficial point to make because people should not feel bad about having these feelings and should feel comfortable about talking about them with others if they need it. Awesome Poem!

  25. Oshane on September 25, 2022 at 4:33 PM

Thank you for reminding us that we are all humans and we have emotions. We all face some form of adversity and at times we try to conceal our deepest feelings due to fear of being seen as week. Releasing emotions of pain and sorrow is important to heal we should not be afraid to express our selves and let it go.

  26. Conor Thompson on October 2, 2022 at 10:36 AM

JS your poem and the detail on how expressing your own emotions and feelings towards other peoples feelings really hits home with me. Its never really a good thing to hold your emotions in. Its important to express how you are feeling at this time. Its also ok (the double sided sword) to keep something in if its protect someone and it will hurt them if they know. But that really depends on what it is.

  27. Josie Kelly on October 3, 2022 at 8:38 PM

I think your poem is very important. This shows an important message and how many people feel. I completely agree with the part about how “emotions cause pain, let the all out to remain sane”. This is very important and so true. Keep writing, your work is great!

  28. Halie on October 6, 2022 at 4:25 PM

I strongly believe that everybody at some point in their life can relate to this poem and that is what makes it amazing. You can feel the emotion when reading it and it makes you think about it so much. A lot of people hide their emotions to protect themselves and will deny feeling that way and you put it into a way to say more people do that than you think.

  29. Jaxson Pawlowski on October 7, 2022 at 9:30 AM

Everyone does have emotions, which can be scary because everyone can have a different reaction to the same event, making it difficult to predict human behavior.

I like how the 2nd paragraph shifts towards inspiring others to express their emotions and not keep them bottled up.

I wish you are having only the best emotions right now! Stay sane!

This poem is very technical, and I love the topic. I also really liked how you wrote a question in the middle of the poem, it really made me as a reader engaged in the poem. I agree with you that emotions are really strong and that everyone should not be afraid to express them. Also, I always love when poets have their poems rhyme!

  31. Alexis on October 9, 2022 at 7:35 PM

    JS,

You are right, we all as humans have emotions, whether some suppress it, and others release it often. As you said, this is not something we should be ashamed of as it is natural. Releasing our emotions allows us to grow, change, and become the best versions of ourselves. Holding emotions in, can make us appear to act out like someone we are not and is not healthy. Releasing emotions is painful in the moment but facing them allows us to overcome. Your poem is a good reminder to those reading to allow themselves to feel their emotions and to not take shame in it.

  32. kayley on October 16, 2022 at 5:29 PM

This is such an important topic that isn’t discussed very often these days. We were instructed not to let our feelings influence our decisions and to maintain control at all times. The word choice and your claim that emotions are neither good nor negative were great. It’s best to identify your feelings and talk about them than to try to suppress them. Feelings are normal, and some people may feel better about them than others.

  33. olivia on October 17, 2022 at 10:27 PM

I couldn’t have said it better myself, JS. This is an excellent poem that expresses emotions perfectly. We as humans are literally built to have emotions, and our brains are hardwired to do so. So, it is definitely a good thing, even though it is very hard to express them and let them out. This is something I have been struggling with for a while, and it took me some time to realize how to express them and not suppress them, so this is very relatable. Bottling it up can make us explode and make us break down, so it is best to regulate those and let them out somehow. There is a very large stigma around emotions, and are often gender stereotyped, so I believe this also plays an impact on why it can be difficult to show emotions or come to other people with them. Great work.

    Hi JS,
What a beautiful poem! The message that you convey through your words is such an important one, but I think it’s something that a lot of people forget. I know I certainly do. I think the reason for that is because the world we live in is such an intense and sometimes unhappy place, and people feel that they should keep their emotions to themselves to seem strong. Societal norms make people feel like they are weak or unstable if they express their emotions, and your poem was a powerful reminder that this isn’t the case. I loved the lines “Always keep in mind that emotions cause pain/ Let them all out to remain sane.” This message was so powerful but written in such a beautiful way with a nice flow. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing reminder!

I think this poem touches a lot of important subjects in little words. To answer the question if emotions are good to hide or not, I think it depends on who you ask, but with me I think emotions are ok to hide sometimes. Sometimes you’re the only one who can comfort your feelings and sometimes you know that no one will understand you’re emotions, but I also think it’s amazing to share emotions. It feels great to tell someone your emotions and feel validated and you can just get them out of your head that distorts your emotions. There is a massive stereotype, especially about men, that its not ok to share feelings, but like you said feelings make you human, if you don’t have feelings then there’s something wrong. I also completely agree that holding in your emotions cause such inner pain because you are your worst nightmare. You end up overthinking your emotions and they end up turning against you. This is a great poem thank you for sharing:)

  36. Meghan on October 21, 2022 at 9:25 PM

This poem is a great explanation of how emotions work. I especially love the line “having feelings means you’re human and not a lame.” This quote stood out to me because sometimes, showing emotions is frowned upon and it shouldn’t be. Everyone has different emotions and should not feel shame to express them. I loved this poem, keep up the great work!

  37. Emily on October 23, 2022 at 10:32 PM

The poem is really important for some people to read. Everyday we hide our emotions afraid of being judged. Our emotions can be perceived as bad. Boys crying is seen as bad. And girls being in control is seen as her being pushy. Our emotions can be perceived badly even if they are good. It’s okay for boys to cry and it’s okay that girls can lead. Your work shows us that.

  38. Julia Santosuosso on October 23, 2022 at 11:29 PM

This is such a beautiful poem. I have been thinking about this idea a lot recently especially because I have such a hard time remembering just how important it is to feel my emotions sometimes. Emotions can be scary to confront, but feeling is the most humane thing we can do, it’s what keeps us going in every given area in our lives. I am so happy I got the chance to read your poetry and remind myself of this. Thank you so much for sharing.

  39. Anna on October 30, 2022 at 6:22 PM

JS, I loved this poem so much. It honestly made me think about people a lot. Even though everyone is so different, we truly are all the same. We can all connect with our emotions no matter how we came to be. I also love that you pointed out that we shouldn’t be ashamed of our emotions! That is so so important and sometimes I forget that. Thank you for sharing this!!!

Hi JS, this poem really made me think. I like how you boiled humanity down to simply feeling. It made me feel a sense of unity with those around me. I like the idea that while some go left, and others go right, we are all still the same on the inside. We shouldn’t feel ashamed to feel because that’s what makes us human! Keep writing these valuable lessons!

  42. aaliyah on November 8, 2022 at 11:54 AM

Hello JS, your poem was amazing. I feel like this is a topic that isn’t talked about a lot. I feel like everyone goes through a moment where they feel like they need to be strong, or that they aren’t supposed to feel the way they do or that maybe there crazy for feeling the way they do, but you proved here in your poem we all are on the same ship when we think about the bigger picture, and no. matter what good or bad we should let our feelings show for our own peace. I like how you said “were all human and come from the same path” because I feel like we forget that point all the time. I feel like a lot of us don’t express ourselves because we feel like others won’t understand, but even though we go through different situations in life doesn’t mean we won’t experience the same feelings. I love the whole message in your poem and the fact you decided to talk on it and chare some really motivating advice. Thank you so much for sharing this poem I loved it!
    I wish you well!- Aaliyah

    Hi JS,
This poem was really special to me to read. As someone who tends to hide their feelings, I think the poem expresses the positive and negative outcomes of hiding them. As well as showing us that having emotions isn’t a bad thing, this is because we are all human and we all have emotions whether we want them or want to admit we have them. I think even though your poem was short it was full of all this information jammed in. I think that is hard to achieve but you did it great. Great Job!

  44. Safwan on November 21, 2022 at 8:32 PM

I love the message of your poem, leaving emotions to fester and grow without release gets everyone nowhere. It’s so wildly important to let ourselves feel whether it’s good or bad. The dichotomy you create with the emotions is so interesting because I feel like a lot of emotions are so complex and yet people tend to treat emotions in that black and white matter. I hope we all take the path to allowing ourselves to feel, be it bad, good, or a little bit of both

  45. Nico on November 26, 2022 at 11:22 AM

I love the rhythm this poem flows with. It’s imperative to let ourselves feel our emotions as well as speak out about them. Confront or even talking about them is scary but beneficial for you in the end.

  47. Andrew on November 27, 2022 at 9:05 PM

This is very insightful! I like how it deepens into the human psychology of hiding our feelings to prevent things from happening, but doing so would lead to long-term consequences.

  48. Ava on December 7, 2022 at 3:29 PM

Your poem “emotions” touches my heart greatly. I am so glad you decided to write about emotions, it is a topic that society is afraid to speak on. I have struggled with my past, and emotions have always been very important to me due to my circumstances. One line stuck out to me, “Always keep in mind that emotions cause pain, let them all out to remain sane.” I believe this line emphasizes your message regarding emotions. Sometimes holding in emotions can hurt us more in the long run. The word choice of “sane” and “pain” really pulled the lines together. In this section of the poem, I noticed the technique of rhyme. Throughout the poem, you use a lot of words with the “long-a” sound, I think this is very clever to do. It keeps the poem flowing and gives pleasure to the reader. Another aspect of your poem that I enjoyed was the tone. You establish the tone by using phrases like “we” or “our,” this fits perfectly with the message of the poem and I believe it was a very nice touch! It is like music to my ears. You made the poem relatable by using language like: “…we’re all humans and come from the same path.”Again, I believe the message of your poem was so touching. Feelings and emotions are something to be beneficial and valued in individuals, we all need to notice our feelings. Your work made me realize the true importance of emotions and feel in touch with my own.

  49. Ben on December 7, 2022 at 3:30 PM

    Dear JS,
I really enjoyed reading your poem “Emotions”. Your use of rhyming in your final stanza really stood out to me. I love how you wrote, “Always keep in mind that emotions cause pain—Let them all out to remain sane”. It does a great job of pushing across the reason why you wrote this poem. It leaves readers, like me, with the important message that in order to stop the pain that these emotions cause us, we need to have the courage to talk about them and let them go. I also noticed how the line, “But our emotions are all the same,” rhymes with the final stanza as well. That is a good connection between the two stanzas and points out that we don’t need to be ashamed or hide our feelings because every human has them. I also like how you gave me along with other readers a sense of comfort by writing, “We’re all humans and come from the same path.” This line, along with addressing the reader as “we”, helps us connect to you as a writer and understand that we are just like everyone else and that it is perfectly normal to have emotions. It made me feel as if I am not alone when I encounter negative emotions, and that it is perfectly okay to talk about them.
    Best wishes,
    Ben (Minnesota)

  50. Jordyn on December 7, 2022 at 3:31 PM

    Dear JS,

I absolutely loved reading this poem! From top to bottom I can hear the words speaking to me almost directly. I have always struggled with dealing with my emotions growing up, especially when I was younger. Over the past few years, I have gotten more comfortable expressing how I feel and not hiding from that discomfort. I especially love when you wrote, “Having feeling means you’re human and not a lame” Now that I am older, I can see that this is the same feeling I would get when I was sad or down on my luck. I never wanted to look vulnerable to others and it has set me back a few steps in my journey of life. This poem helped me feel better about expressing how I feel and not feeling ashamed because of it. When you wrote, “We’re all humans and come from the same path. Some goes left / others going right” I like that you added the / in between the two directions as it helps emphasize the differences each individual person has. It helps bring meaning to the later lines when you write, “But our emotions are all the same” The way that you have structured your words and positioned your ideas helps make this poem seem like a novel compared to the few words that are actually on the page. Continue to keep at your writing as you already have a very intricate piece of art that speaks to millions of different people.

Hi JS. This poem is great. Emotions are very important to talk about, it’s not talked about a lot that it’s okay to feel emotions. It is certainly not healthy to hold in emotions. It is totally okay to be vulnerable with emotions.

  52. Laura Haas on February 4, 2023 at 5:40 PM

    Hi JS,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on emotions. I feel the same and am very passionate about this topic. I encourage everyone to express their emotions, as they are real and normal. I hate the stereotype of “men shouldn’t cry” or “women are emotional.” Everyone feels emotions, so why not express them? It isn’t a sign of weakness to cry, but rather a strength and passion for a topic. It’s very important to feel and express your emotions, whether they are good or bad. Thank you for sharing this powerful piece.

  53. Mackenzie Curry on February 19, 2023 at 5:18 PM

    Hi!
I really like how you decided to write about this subject. As someone who has a hard time dealing with my emotions and expressing them outload, I think it’s important for everyone to hear that it’s not something embarrassing. We are all just humans trying to live life, but with an array of emotions that comes with it that we have to deal with whether you want to or not. I really like how you created this poem!

  54. eleni on February 19, 2023 at 9:37 PM

I love the meaning behind this poem. It is true, we all have emotions, good or bad. Hiding our emotions is a human thing to do, but it can be unhealthy sometimes. I believe letting ourselves feel the negative emotions instead of suppressing them is the best thing we can do to allow ourselves to heal. It is in the toughest times that we need to be reminded of this, so I think this poem is lovely. Great work!

  55. Colleen on February 20, 2023 at 4:50 PM

This is a poem I can relate to. Hiding emotions is something I am guilty of, but I know it is much better to let them out. I always try to get my friends to tell me what’s wrong and I try the best I can to do the same to them. It feels so much better expressing your emotions and not bottling them up all the time.

  56. AR on March 6, 2023 at 2:11 PM

Hi, This poem is really good, I love how you express the need to show emotions. A lot of people are scared to show emotions, now a days humans judge other humans and say they are weak, and all these wrong things that are not true. Im glad you spoke on this topic, keep writing!

  57. PH on March 22, 2023 at 7:30 PM

It’s true that everyone has emotions whether they are good or bad but two different perspectives and feelings we get from them. Sometimes while hiding our feelings, it neither good or bad because it’s neutral and balanced. We are all humans who come from the sake creator at least and that’s a path right there. Sole people choose to go on the left path while others choose to go on the right path thanks to our unique individuality. It’s amazing that our emotions are all the same where some go up or down or in between but we definitely relate to our emotions and share them with each other like I must feel sad when I’m sad and feel happy when I’m happy. Having feeling means that we’re humans because we’re not robots. Just let it out and who cares! I love the closing lines where it’s advice.

  58. Marisa on March 24, 2023 at 1:51 PM

Hello! I think this poem beautifully addresses the stigma around how emotions are expressed. Both men and women are expected by society to present or hide their emotions in certain ways. I applaud you for speaking out on this societal issue in a way that is direct and sympathetic. You’re right, we all experience the same emotions, so why not express them in ways that work best for us without the judgment of others? I loved this piece and I hope you continue to create more.

Your poem is a powerful reminder of the importance of acknowledging and expressing our emotions, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable they may be. The way you express that everyone has emotions, and that sometimes we choose to hide them, is a relatable sentiment that many people can identify with. The final line “Let them all out to remain sane” is a great call to action, encouraging us to release our emotions in a healthy way so that we can maintain our mental and emotional well-being. It’s a reminder that holding onto emotions can cause pain, and that expressing them can be a powerful tool for healing and growth.

Overall, your poem is a poignant reminder that emotions are a vital part of the human experience, and that expressing them can help us to connect with ourselves and others on a deeper level. Keep writing and sharing your words of wisdom with the world, as they have the power to touch and uplift many lives. Well done!

Your poem displays an important message about emotions and the importance of expressing them. It emphasizes that everyone, regardless of their differences, experiences emotions, and it’s okay to express them without shame. this is something everyone relates to and can come together on I for one have difficulties at the time expressing my difficult-to-process emotions to others for a variety of reasons, but this put it into perspective for me that there is no reason to hide your emotions because everyone has them and there are others who can relate. The rhyming and repetition added to the beauty and structure of this poem so well.

Hello! I really like your poem and how straight forward it is. I think it is hard to realize that everyone has emotions, but not everyone is comfortable talking about them. But it is important to realize that your feelings are valid and people should feel comfortable to share them.
