Dream

By JJ

A dream is like hope

When you dream you hope it comes true

When it is denied you be happy still
because you saw it in your dream.

When your dream comes true you feel so happy
you hope all your good dreams come true.

Yes there are some bad dreams, those dreams you wish
it do not come true and you want to get out of
that dream.

A dream is like hope

You hope it comes true or you hope it don’t come true.

    Hi JJ,

I think you made great points in this piece. Your connection of dreams to hope is really well done. I love the way you look at a dream not coming true as good because you still dreamed of it – that’s really beautiful. Keep it up, I’d love to see more from you!

    JJ,
I love the way you used reptition in your poem. Even though your poem is not extremely long, it is very too the point and I think your direct approach makes this poem very powerful. I hope all your good dreams come true! Keep writing! -Pat

I really enjoyed you poem. I find it be motivating to actually “DREAM!” Whether they are good or bad, it is a dream. The dream is the important part. I got that from your poem.. Thank you for writing it.

This poem is absolutely great. I really enjoyed reading this. This says a lot about dreams that we have, dreams being hope. I never compared dreams to hope, but after seeing that now made me see that. Awesome job. By far my favorite poem. Continue to write poems.

    JJ,

Whilst at first glance being a seemingly very straightforward poem, I found myself reading and re-reading your writing as its simplicity struck something in me that I wanted to be sure I capitalized on. The sudden contrast you emphasize between the “good” dream and the “bad” dream creates a dynamic that I’ve never really thought about. We all know the common phrase, “may all your dreams come true,” but it becomes apparent that maybe this isn’t always something that is to be desired. Bad dreams occur just as frequently as good dreams and, like you stated, are ones that you want to escape from and hope that they never come true. All the same, we do definitely hope that our good dreams come true because, as you said, you feel happy. So does this mean telling someone that you hope all their dreams come true is an all-or-nothing situation, or am I simply looking too deep into a quite easy to understand phrase?

All rambling aside, this poem is very unique in its ability to make a person look closer into what it is they want and why it is that they want that. Whether good or bad, each of the dreams we have (referring to both our life goals as well as our nighttime experiences) is its own being and needs to be kept that way in order to get the results we want.

    Keep up the good work!

I really enjoyed this new perspective this poem has given me. I never really thought of a dream and a hope being so similar before. I dream a lot and I always hope some come true, even if they are farfetched. Next time I dream of something I hope to happen, I will think of this poem and wonder if that dream ever will come true.

  7. Ian on April 8, 2020 at 12:35 PM

JJ, I really enjoyed reading this poem. I really like how you expressed the two meanings of dreams: that they can be hopeful and wonderful, or they can be bad like nightmares. You connect the ideas of dreams and hope in a way that gives you control over the feelings they cause. I encourage you to keep up the great work and continue writing poetry, I look forward to reading them.

Thank you for your poem, it is extremely inspiring and there is so much emotion in it. Reading this makes one feel that it everything is okay and when bad things happen in life you keep moving forwards.

I have heard some talk about dreaming, dreamers, and dreamy things. I think this poem finds some truth within in dreams and guidance as well. A dreamer is happy because they have the imagination to see what is possible, and they can they carry that vision to out to make it real. Some people say they don’t dream, but they would rather exist within their own reality. Maybe they have bad dreams and are hoping they don’t come true.
I’ve never thought of dreams like hope. But I like how you compare bad dreams and hope in the last line.
This poem reminds me of a old comic strip. One guy asks another what he wishes for, and he responds by saying “a sandwich.” The first guy starts getting irritated because there are some many other things to wish for like a boat, a big house, or super powers. Later the other guy makes a sandwich and says “My wish came true.”

    Hey JJ,

This poem was beautiful and sad. It hit me pretty hard. I was thinking about how it’s sometimes usually the bad dreams that come true, but we have the power to make sure that the good dreams are the ones that come true. I hope you keep writing because you are talented.

  11. Fateema Farzana on April 15, 2020 at 8:22 PM

    JJ,
I love your poem about dream. I personally believe that the more you dream, the more you can make them true- exactly what you expressed here! Dreams give me hope to go ahead, dreams are the reason that give us motivation so we can make them true. And if we have a bad dream, we can just try to forget them. Loved you poem!

  12. Molly Reed on April 18, 2020 at 5:54 PM

Hi JJ, thank you for your poem. I particularly enjoyed how you explored the relationship between hopes and dreams. You have a way of illustrating a complex scene with very few words, what a gift! I wish you all the best.

    Hi JJ,

I think this piece is very interesting. I like how you don’t just focus on the good side of dreams, but the bad as well. This makes it real and relatable. Continue writing, you never know who your work could impact.

    JJ,
Thank you for sharing your poetry. Hold on to your hope. I hope that you will continue sharing your poetry with the world.

  15. Gabriella on April 21, 2020 at 11:00 PM

I enjoyed reading this poem. There are so many people in this world who try to take away your hope and who tell you that you can’t achieve your dreams, but it is so important hold onto what you know and ignore them. Dreams can come true. The last two lines spoke to me the most; they summed the entirety of the poem wonderfully.

  16. Isabelle Eskay on April 23, 2020 at 2:34 PM

JJ, this poem is so meaningful. I love how you connected dreams and hope in a way I would never have thought of.

  17. Beth Ellinport on April 23, 2020 at 2:40 PM

When I read your poem, I immediately resonated with it. I dream. I dream a lot. Some I wish for and some I don’t. You are so right. But the joy you feel when achieving that dream/goal you always have wanted is like no other. I hope the dreams you want come true. And you will always keep chasing them.

  18. Haley on April 23, 2020 at 2:43 PM

I can relate to this poem very much! I think when most people are talking about dreams, they forget to discuss the scary ones too. I always find myself worrying about certain bad things that can happen in my life, and they often take the form of a bad dream. I appreciate how you recognized that although dreams are the source of hope, they can sometimes be bad as well.

  19. Keli on April 24, 2020 at 10:01 AM

I really enjoyed your take on dreams and how they can serve as a source of hope and fear. Thank you for sharing.

  20. Emily on April 24, 2020 at 6:38 PM

I love the dynamic relationship you establish between dreams and hopes. In some ways, you can’t have one without another. I hope you keep exploring through writing, JJ.

  21. Yesica Benitez on April 27, 2020 at 2:07 PM

    JJ,

dreams are truly unpredictable. Sometimes I have had dreams where I am in beautiful places and when I wake up I wish it was real. I have also had sad dreams where a loved one died. Dreams are hope, they are a way to see something that you wish it would come true. I lived this poem because it reminded me of all the times I have wished a dream of mine would come true.

  22. Jocelyn Matos on April 28, 2020 at 6:44 PM

You should pray and record all you dreams. I like where you are going with this. Keep it up! Dreams are hopes until you become them.

  23. Brynn on May 1, 2020 at 11:51 AM

Thank you so much for sharing this poem with us. I really enjoy how you still see the positives even when dreams do not come true. I had never thought about it in that way. But you are right, you can still be happy when dreams do not come true because you can see them in your dreams!

  24. Katie on May 1, 2020 at 12:00 PM

I really liked your poem and it is very thoughtful on dreams. Many of us have wants, but to have a dream is deeper and you emulate that you do. It takes strength and courage to have dreams. Be proud.

  25. Alana Greene on May 1, 2020 at 12:02 PM

I believe dreams are hopes too. Everyday I dream of something new and it will bring me a smile just thinking about it even if it doesn’t come true. I dream about things that could possibly be reality in hopes it does come true. I understand where you are also coming from with bad dreams. When I have a bad dream I have a tendency to sleep walk or talk. This is really me trying to escape my dream.

  26. Kendall Lambert on May 1, 2020 at 12:05 PM

This is simple yet beautiful because it’s true. It made me realize just how right you are, that when one dreams they hope it comes true or doesn’t. One is always hoping when it comes to dreams. And I love how you put this deep message in such simple phrases. This poem felt happy to me. Maybe it was your use of the word happy or the fact that you discuss more positive dreams than negative. But I really loved how this touched me.

  27. Abby Carlin on May 1, 2020 at 12:05 PM

This is relatable because everyone has dreams. It is a good metaphor to say that a dream is like hope. I wish you the best of luck!

  28. Sarah Adams on May 1, 2020 at 12:07 PM

To JJ, This was very moving to me. I have a lot of dreams yet I have a lot of fears that I hope do not come true. I think we all have that, something that scares us. It makes us human. Be stronger than your fears and don’t let them win. However, acknowledge that they’re there. You have a strong and beautiful mind. Keep writing poems and it really makes me think about my own aspirations and reluctance.
    Sincerely,
    S

  29. haley on May 1, 2020 at 12:19 PM

This is such a relatable poem for people of all different backgrounds or different ages. Everyone know’s what a dream is. Sometimes when you’re sleeping and you’re having a bad dream you wake yourself up because you want to get out of it. Everyone knows the feeling of relief that you get when you wake up from a bad dream and realize that it’s just that…a bad dream. On the other hand…everyone knows the feeling when you’re asleep, having a great dream, and those outside noises and alarms start going off but you keep your eyes closed and just try to enjoy it as long as you can.

    JJ,

I love this writing a great deal. Putting your dreams in perspective has changed how I look at good scenarios and bad situations in life. Your words are quite simple, yet very powerful. Thank you for teaching me a new lesson that I will hold onto for a long time.

  31. TB on May 8, 2020 at 12:34 PM

    JJ,

Dream something so incredible that it comes true. But it’s not just hoping it will come true. Dreaming is like working hard. Work hard for your dreams and your dreams will come true!

  32. Christine T. on May 14, 2020 at 2:07 PM

    Dear JJ,

I really liked the emphasis you placed on both dreams and hope in your poem, as well as how the two are interconnected in many ways. Additionally, you really highlighted the duality of our lives as a whole in the way that you described how a dream could be both good and bad, depending on the night. You can have hope that things go your way but you can also have hope in a different type of way– one where you have hope that you do not have to have negative experiences again. Both are considered “hopes” but are extremely different types of hope, stemming either from our want for something to occur or our desire to not have to go through certain incidences ever again. Your poem is extremely important because it helps the reader to remember that experiences that they go through can be both “good” or “bad” and that it is not always necessarily one or the other.

Thank you so much for sharing!

    Best,
    Christine T.

I love how you describe that a just happy dream can leave you happy. I never thought of it that way but it is so true. There is certainly a joy to just imagining happy things even if they can’t/don’t happen. Your comparison of dreams and hope is brilliant.

    Great job here JJ

I was captivated by how much in fact are dreams are like hope. It never crossed my mind.

You opened my eyes here and I’d like to share much of our dreams can come true with hard work. Unfortunately we have such a bizarre imagination that some things are just not tangible. Makes you question our existence.

    Keep writing material like this!
Maybe even add a little more detail next time as well.

    Goodluck

Hey JJ, I really like this poem. You made some good points and made me look at some things a new way. I never really connected dreams and hope like that but it is so true. Great job! Thank you for sharing this!

  36. Emily H on April 16, 2021 at 9:44 PM

Hi JJ, my name is Emily and I am a student at a university in Detroit. As part of one of my English classes we are engaging in service and community and that is how I stumbled across this website. I was really drawn into your poem and the concept of dreams being like hope. After reading through your poem, I think I would have to agree with what you say. If we have a dream that we are holding on to, that it what gets us going through our day. Our bad dreams are the ones we don’t want to come true. I feel like we place our hope in a lot of things including our dreams and that is what keeps us pushing. We dream of the best life for us and strive for that. I feel like when I have a dream that doesn’t come true, it doesn’t make me happy but I see your point in saying that it made you happy because you know that it could happen. I wish you the best of dreams and all the hope in the world. Thank you for helping look into what my dreams are and how they make me feel.

  37. Emily H on April 30, 2021 at 1:26 AM

Hi JJ, my name is Emily and I attend college in Detroit. I am currently taking an English class in which we combine service and community into our class work and that is how I came across this website. I agree with you that a dream is like hope. If we have something to look forward to or something we want to happen, it makes it that much more satisfying when it happens. I don’t know if I would say that I am happy when one of my dreams doesn’t come true, but I think it is a way to push yourself harder to either achieve that dream or a different one you had for yourself. I also think you are right in saying that you hope some of your dreams don’t come true and there are others you wish would come true. I hope that all your dreams can come true. Thank you for sharing!

  38. Eddie on May 1, 2021 at 12:32 AM

    JJ,
Hi, I’m Edmon and I’m in a class that aims to engage with the community beyond the university and corporations. This is something I really stand for and a big reason why I liked this poem so much. The message was that with hard work anything is possible with your dreams and hopes in life. A lot of people right now do not understand that and just want everything handed to them, which is not how it works. Good job and good luck!

  39. Katie on May 3, 2021 at 3:56 PM

    JJ,
You so beautifully encaptured the idea of dreams being a duality. Both sides of the coin, good vs evil. While we may hope that those dreams that are bad never come true, sometimes they do, however the feeling we get when the good dreams come true is unmatched by any other. Those are the dreams that we can chase forever and ever until we catch them. I think your poem can even be applied to the modern world we live in. There always seems to be the idea of good or bad but never into between. Maybe life is a dream, but is it good or bad?

  40. Julia on October 27, 2021 at 12:10 PM

Hey, thank you for sharing this. I like how you compared hopes and dreams throughout your poem. They really are so similar because when we dream we truly do hope that it comes true. The more it happens the more hope we have for the next good thing. I like how you included the bad things too because we would be naive to thing that everything is always good. But we CHOOSE to hope for better things to come. Although we all go through dark times and it can be easy to lose hope, we should focus on the positive and our good dreams that are to come. I hope to read more of your work!

  41. Jalen Walker on November 15, 2021 at 11:49 PM

I truly loved your poetry, and I appreciate how you open my eyes to the possibility that working hard might bring these dreams to reality.

  42. Anna Carpentiere on September 29, 2022 at 2:06 PM

This poem is very powerful and emotional. A dream is a hope and a hope for the future. Most people think that a dream comes true. There are two different types of dreams in my eyes. The first is dreams we remember from sleep and the second is hope we have and ideas for our future. When dreams come true it’s refreshing and we feel successful; soon after we think of other dreams higher than before. You got this and remember the best is yet to come!

  43. EH on November 21, 2022 at 6:53 PM

    JJ,
I love the way you draw hope and dreams together in your poem as two things fundamental to one another’s value. I also really like how you noted that even when you have a bad dream, there still exists that beutiful sense of hope, only in a different form. Your casual writing style makes for a very enjoyable read!

  44. Cassidy on November 28, 2022 at 9:16 AM

    Hi JJ,

I loved reading this poem. Our dreams can be incredibly important and influential for us. I think we can all relate to feeling like we want certain dreams of ours to come true. Achieving a goal or dream you have is an unmatched feeling that we all strive for. Your poem is very realistic and relatable to how people dream and try to achieve their dreams. I love how uplifting your poem is! Great work. I hope to read more of your writing soon.

    Best,
    CB

    Hi JJ,
I really enjoyed reading your poem. I liked how you connected dreams and hope, and how both can be good in bad. Normally, dreams not coming true is a bad thing. However, I liked how you viewed it as a good thing! You opened my eyes to how much dreams are similar to hope; they can push you to work harder if they don’t come true, but can also be so satisfying if they are achieved. Thank you for sharing your ideas and writing.
