A dream is like hope
When you dream you hope it comes true
When it is denied you be happy still
because you saw it in your dream.
When your dream comes true you feel so happy
you hope all your good dreams come true.
Yes there are some bad dreams, those dreams you wish
it do not come true and you want to get out of
that dream.
A dream is like hope
You hope it comes true or you hope it don’t come true.

Whilst at first glance being a seemingly very straightforward poem, I found myself reading and re-reading your writing as its simplicity struck something in me that I wanted to be sure I capitalized on. The sudden contrast you emphasize between the “good” dream and the “bad” dream creates a dynamic that I’ve never really thought about. We all know the common phrase, “may all your dreams come true,” but it becomes apparent that maybe this isn’t always something that is to be desired. Bad dreams occur just as frequently as good dreams and, like you stated, are ones that you want to escape from and hope that they never come true. All the same, we do definitely hope that our good dreams come true because, as you said, you feel happy. So does this mean telling someone that you hope all their dreams come true is an all-or-nothing situation, or am I simply looking too deep into a quite easy to understand phrase?
All rambling aside, this poem is very unique in its ability to make a person look closer into what it is they want and why it is that they want that. Whether good or bad, each of the dreams we have (referring to both our life goals as well as our nighttime experiences) is its own being and needs to be kept that way in order to get the results we want.

I really enjoyed this new perspective this poem has given me. I never really thought of a dream and a hope being so similar before. I dream a lot and I always hope some come true, even if they are farfetched. Next time I dream of something I hope to happen, I will think of this poem and wonder if that dream ever will come true.

I have heard some talk about dreaming, dreamers, and dreamy things. I think this poem finds some truth within in dreams and guidance as well. A dreamer is happy because they have the imagination to see what is possible, and they can they carry that vision to out to make it real. Some people say they don’t dream, but they would rather exist within their own reality. Maybe they have bad dreams and are hoping they don’t come true.
I’ve never thought of dreams like hope. But I like how you compare bad dreams and hope in the last line.
This poem reminds me of a old comic strip. One guy asks another what he wishes for, and he responds by saying “a sandwich.” The first guy starts getting irritated because there are some many other things to wish for like a boat, a big house, or super powers. Later the other guy makes a sandwich and says “My wish came true.”

This poem was beautiful and sad. It hit me pretty hard. I was thinking about how it’s sometimes usually the bad dreams that come true, but we have the power to make sure that the good dreams are the ones that come true. I hope you keep writing because you are talented.

I love your poem about dream. I personally believe that the more you dream, the more you can make them true- exactly what you expressed here! Dreams give me hope to go ahead, dreams are the reason that give us motivation so we can make them true. And if we have a bad dream, we can just try to forget them. Loved you poem!

I enjoyed reading this poem. There are so many people in this world who try to take away your hope and who tell you that you can’t achieve your dreams, but it is so important hold onto what you know and ignore them. Dreams can come true. The last two lines spoke to me the most; they summed the entirety of the poem wonderfully.

When I read your poem, I immediately resonated with it. I dream. I dream a lot. Some I wish for and some I don’t. You are so right. I can relate to this poem very much! I think when most people are talking about dreams, they forget to discuss the scary ones too. I always find myself worrying about certain bad things that can happen in my life, and they often take the form of a bad dream. dreams are truly unpredictable. Sometimes I have had dreams where I am in beautiful places and when I wake up I wish it was real. I have also had sad dreams where a loved one died. Dreams are hope, they are a way to see something that you wish it would come true. I lived this poem because it reminded me of all the times I have wished a dream of mine would come true.
You should pray and record all you dreams. I like where you are going with this. Keep it up! Dreams are hopes until you become them.

I really liked your poem and it is very thoughtful on dreams. Many of us have wants, but to have a dream is deeper and you emulate that you do. It takes strength and courage to have dreams. Be proud.
I believe dreams are hopes too. Everyday I dream of something new and it will bring me a smile just thinking about it even if it doesn’t come true. I dream about things that could possibly be reality in hopes it does come true. I understand where you are also coming from with bad dreams. When I have a bad dream I have a tendency to sleep walk or talk. This is really me trying to escape my dream.

To JJ, This was very moving to me. I have a lot of dreams yet I have a lot of fears that I hope do not come true. I think we all have that, something that scares us. It makes us human. Be stronger than your fears and don’t let them win. However, acknowledge that they’re there. You have a strong and beautiful mind. This is such a relatable poem for people of all different backgrounds or different ages. Everyone know’s what a dream is. Sometimes when you’re sleeping and you’re having a bad dream you wake yourself up because you want to get out of it. Everyone knows the feeling of relief that you get when you wake up from a bad dream and realize that it’s just that…a bad dream. On the other hand…everyone knows the feeling when you’re asleep, having a great dream, and those outside noises and alarms start going off but you keep your eyes closed and just try to enjoy it as long as you can.

I really liked the emphasis you placed on both dreams and hope in your poem, as well as how the two are interconnected in many ways. Additionally, you really highlighted the duality of our lives as a whole in the way that you described how a dream could be both good and bad, depending on the night. You can have hope that things go your way but you can also have hope in a different type of way– one where you have hope that you do not have to have negative experiences again. Both are considered “hopes” but are extremely different types of hope, stemming either from our want for something to occur or our desire to not have to go through certain incidences ever again. Your poem is extremely important because it helps the reader to remember that experiences that they go through can be both “good” or “bad” and that it is not always necessarily one or the other.

I love how you describe that a just happy dream can leave you happy. I never thought of it that way but it is so true. There is certainly a joy to just imagining happy things even if they can’t/don’t happen. Your comparison of dreams and hope is brilliant.

You opened my eyes here and I’d like to share much of our dreams can come true with hard work. Unfortunately we have such a bizarre imagination that some things are just not tangible. Makes you question our existence.

Hi JJ, my name is Emily and I am a student at a university in Detroit. As part of one of my English classes we are engaging in service and community and that is how I stumbled across this website. I was really drawn into your poem and the concept of dreams being like hope. After reading through your poem, I think I would have to agree with what you say. If we have a dream that we are holding on to, that it what gets us going through our day. Our bad dreams are the ones we don’t want to come true. I feel like we place our hope in a lot of things including our dreams and that is what keeps us pushing. We dream of the best life for us and strive for that. I feel like when I have a dream that doesn’t come true, it doesn’t make me happy but I see your point in saying that it made you happy because you know that it could happen. I am currently taking an English class in which we combine service and community into our class work and that is how I came across this website. I agree with you that a dream is like hope. If we have something to look forward to or something we want to happen, it makes it that much more satisfying when it happens. I don’t know if I would say that I am happy when one of my dreams doesn’t come true, but I think it is a way to push yourself harder to either achieve that dream or a different one you had for yourself. The message was that with hard work anything is possible with your dreams and hopes in life. You so beautifully encaptured the idea of dreams being a duality. Both sides of the coin, good vs evil. While we may hope that those dreams that are bad never come true, sometimes they do, however the feeling we get when the good dreams come true is unmatched by any other. Those are the dreams that we can chase forever and ever until we catch them. I think your poem can even be applied to the modern world we live in. There always seems to be the idea of good or bad but never into between. Maybe life is a dream, but is it good or bad?

This poem is very powerful and emotional. A dream is a hope and a hope for the future. Most people think that a dream comes true. There are two different types of dreams in my eyes. The first is dreams we remember from sleep and the second is hope we have and ideas for our future. When dreams come true it’s refreshing and we feel successful; soon after we think of other dreams higher than before. You got this and remember the best is yet to come!
