Endurance

By GL

In
The memory of
Distant memories that burns the chest
Like sips of Hennessey
No chaser
Chased by smug-faced oppressors
Whose job it is to arrest us
Oppress us
For being what we was seeing
At a younger age
Observation of our surroundings
Was the first stage
To the life we chose
The concrete gave birth to a rose
And it bloomed for the world to see
Nurtured by the tears of Angels and Gods
I AM HE

I am a student in a community service course at Wayne State in Detroit whose goal is to engage with the community beyond the university. When I discovered Free Minds I was immediately thrilled to see the connections build around your writings and heart, and what you have to offer is a powerful and beautiful gift to the community. It was a true privilege getting the opportunity to read what is on your heart and mind, your desires and passions, thoughts, and struggles. You have so much to say, so much wisdom to give, and such deep experiences and desires to share with the community that people from all walks of life, backgrounds, beliefs, and ages can deeply connect with and affiliate with. Keep engaging with the community and making your voice heard. You bring healing, hope, and renewal of mind to many who have the privilege to share in your poetry. I don’t even know what to think or say about your poem, it is so distinct and thought provoking. I cannot quite wrap my head around this message, but it is thrilling to think of all the different possible explanations and interpretations. What does stand out to me is the shift and development of your voice throughout the poem. You begin a victim and end a victor. Keep pursuing this writing. You make people think and challenge, convict, and inspire them to think deeper about what they believe and to make a difference.

Your poem is very powerful. It talks about so many different events that intertwine into the same issue. An issue that we have been facing for all our lives and even before us. I love how you expressed this poem and how your words were flowing.
