A Call to Action

By BH

DREAMERS

Running from terror
Chasing freedom
Only to find themselves stuck in cages
Searching for love

But
Met with hatred
Surrounded by foreign faces
Willing to work to pave the way

But
Those in power won’t open the gates
Families divided across the states
Hoping and praying for better days
Will us American people come to their aid

Or
Have our once freed land become
A fascist state?

Peaceful Protest

By AL

“The home of the brave,
and the land of the free”
are notably beautiful
words written by Francis
Scott Key.

Yet. in 1814 those words
didn’t apply to individuals
with the same skin color as
me.
So for all the injustice then
and now that I see,
I proudly place my fist in
the air while taking a
knee.

I stand in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.

Obama

By HW

Positively speaking, you put a face on the black American life.
Instilling courage inside every black man and every black woman, worldwide.
A battered culture, we had been oppressed without a voice for so long.
We were taught not to believe in ourselves.
“OBAMA”
You took a chance at your dreams, when a black president was so far-fetched.
When the threats poured in, and the racial tension was too thick to hide.
You stood tall, with complete confidence in yourself and in our race
and most important, our nation.
I’m proud to call you my brother of color,
and I was, and still am proud to call you our first black American president.
Your actions have showed the youth what a strong black man is and what we all can strive to be.
Lodged in the heart of D.C. you freed the voiceless
and you gave hope to the poverty stricken people without health care.
You visited the land of the colored humans
and gave the great help and hope that our people need.
You sat and spent time with the elderly people of color, who laid the foundation before you.
When young black lives were being haunted and destroyed by crooked police,
you stood in front of the world and said black lives matter.
When young black boys continued to be shot down,
you held the people responsible for it and continued to seek justice.
You visited the victims of family and gave them a renewed strength.
I can’t name everything you have done.
For our country, or the black community.
But I can say that you touched or changed so many lives
and we truly appreciate your movement and fearlessness.

America

By AG

The story of freedom always was a work of art
A picture perfect dream that melted my heart,
We defeated the odds
We as a nation seen our first black president
In the land of the free, and I’m proud to be a resident
Everlasting victory, we made classic history
But as of Nov. 2016 we are now back in misery
Man, I ask God to turn this demonic night back to day
open our eyes and see things His way
We all are blinded by our own desires
And the hate is spreading burning like wildfires
Is this the ugly future we want our kids to face
Grow up and be mistreated, because of their race
This is a disgrace, we all should be ashamed
Democrats, and Republicans we all are the blame
This campaign was the spark to the flame
I hope this poem becomes the reader novocaine
It’s time to wake up before it’s too late to make up
Hate to see my country so divided, one track minded
selfish, secluded, and confined.
Without compassion, and empathy as our sight
We will remain channeled, static and black and white
America the great, a beautiful democracy
has flip to hate and hypocrisy
One Election set off the detection
of constant oppression, race neglection
Religion rejection, to separation
immigration, kids scared of deportation
Damn, we all need reflection, a lil’ god meditation
Because prayer is the only medication
to the hurtful situation
God bless America

Unsolved Mysteries

By DW

Blindness affecting love
War obliterating peace
Miles and miles of loneliness
And for what?
No one knows.
Freedom locked away forever
and at what cost?
Will no one unbury the lost?
Will the children of the stars forever cry?
Will their tears continue to flood the streets?
Who will answer for this?
Secrets being revealed
Water polluted
And for what?
And at what cost?
Who will answer for this?
No one knows
