Poem: “My Son”

My Son

When I had my son,

It was the happiest day of my life.

I was locked up so I felt terrible,

But good at the same time.

When he was born,

I knew that I could start my life over

Because I was going to give him what I didn’t have,

A father.

I missed everything about not having a father

I wish he was in my life

I wouldn’t be in here.

I had to take it upon myself to take care of my mother

To be the man of the house

Buy groceries,

Cook.

I’m going to give my son everything I didn’t get from my dad –

Unconditional love.

I will give him everything he wants,

EVERYTHING!

Your paternal love is inspiring! It is such a blessing to get to raise and love a child of your own. I hope you appreciate every second of it- even the ugly parts. I pray you teach him how to love the same way you love him!

Love is somethings EVERYTHING. I think it is very noble of you to give something more than you have gotten and I hope your son feels this love. Thank you for being a good father because that’s something we need more in this world. I hope you can be everything your dad wasn’t for you and love your son as much as possible.

I like how this poem is honest and full of emotion. You can really feel the mix of happiness and pain the writer is going through, and it makes the poem really powerful. The way they talk about wanting to be a better father and give their son everything they didn’t have is really touching. It shows so much love, regret, and determination all at once, and that makes it really inspiring.
