Family is There
Dust to dawn
while doing wrong
I felt alone
sitting at home
on the phone
still felt alone
going to school
breaking the rules
for what reason
I never knew
mistreated some people
called me evil
I just didn‘t
like some people
people asked me
why so mean
I didn‘t know
do you see?
now I do
I felt alone
never was I
I should‘ve knew
family‘s there through
everything always though.

You know what? I think we all feel alone. I think we all ARE alone in some ways. Even around family and friends you can feel alone. What works for me is faith. In something. It doesn’t have to be “God”, if that’s not what you believe. But somewhere inside you, you know there’s something bigger than you that is always with you. Put your faith in that.
Dear writer, I find it crucially important to look on the good side and to be optimistic which you conveyed the further the poem progressed. I think it’s always important to stay positive and fluently grateful. I love that you have your family to look forward to and how present they are in your life. Reflecting on your past has granted you something to learn from, I think you’re on the right track friend!
I am a student in a community service course at Wayne State in Detroit whose goal is to engage with the community beyond the university. When I discovered Free Minds I was immediately thrilled to see the connections build around your writings and heart, and what you have to offer is a powerful and beautiful gift to the community. It was a true privilege getting the opportunity to read what is on your heart and mind, your desires and passions, thoughts, and struggles. You have so much to say, so much wisdom to give, and such deep experiences and desires to share with the community that people from all walks of life, backgrounds, beliefs, and ages can deeply connect with and affiliate with. Keep engaging with the community and making your voice heard. You bring healing, hope, and renewal of mind to many who have the privilege to share in your poetry. I liked how you discussed that despite all the feelings you were feeling, the poor choices you made, or the mistreatment you got from others, family was always there through and through. On the flip side, we think we will have forever with family as if we had all the time in the world on our fingertips, however we are to cherish that time. It’s a beautiful thought to think that whenever I felt alone, my family was always there. Thank you for this deep reminder.
The rhyming in the poem bounces between each line. What’s beautiful about this poem is the fact that you’re speaking on such a true emotion we all have felt or feel in our life. The feeling of being alone is deep, exhausting, and something unbearable. However, it is something you can work through and wake up and feel life again. Keep listening to yourself and putting yourself first. Keep writing the thoughts down for all of us here. Whatever helps you pour it all out.
