Free Minds Poet Ambassadors will share their own poetry and spoken word performances, as well as poetry by incarcerated Free Minds members. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
About the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery:
Art has the rare ability to mend social, psychological, and physical ills by building community, inspiring change, and celebrating life. Founded in 2008, the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery at Smith Center for Healing and the Arts, is a nonprofit arts space in Washington, DC. The gallery is dedicated to exhibiting fine art that explores the innate connection between healing and creativity. Through a rotating exhibition schedule, the gallery features contemporary artists that address a diversity of significant themes, including spirituality, social change, multiculturalism, health, environmentalism, and community.
Currently on display at the gallery:
Disposition is an exhibition which highlights and includes works of art created by individuals impacted by the justice system. The featured artwork was created by currently and formerly incarcerated artists and the loved ones that are currently affected by the justice system. This exhibition explores how art and creativity aid in healing the trauma caused by the prison system and incarceration. The artwork displayed showcases the raw talent, creativity, and lived experiences by individuals who have become victims of a dehumanizing incarceration system.
