Belonging To Love
By: YA
I want to belong to something
To something positive
To something that makes me grow
Makes me grow as a person
As a son
As a better human being
I want to belong to the community that rejected me
To the streets that I can’t walk through now
But I know I’m going to hit one day
But I know I belong to my family
To something special in their hearts
To something that never is going to go away
To something that’s never gonna change
That’s what I belong to
I belong to love

Y.A. – I really like the hope that you convey in this poem, and your desire to belong to something. I like how you build up your thoughts and ideas to the end of the poem, it builds anticipation. I also like how you have the title of the poem and the last line match. I also like how you use repetition. It would be neat to see you try some imagery in your next poems – like make the reader see, hear, smell — what you write about. thanks for sharing and I look forward to reading more!
I love the raw emotion in this poem. It’s filled with yearning, yet at the end we see that you already do belong to love, which gives hope. I would love to read a follow-up to this poem addressing how far you’ve come, because you have clearly come very far and I’m sure you have a lot to tell the world.
Dear YA: May you meet many who know what you know– that you, and they, belong to love. (I’m 66 and I’m still trying to remember that….)
