Something For The Mind

For so long I have walked a path
that has provided me with nothing of virtue.
I thought I was getting away with something
when I took riches it offered.
As I was taking advantage of it,
it was stealing my spirit.
Now I am empty inside.
I want a new path
that will lead me to a better more fulfilling life.

I love how the sadness of the main poem is contrasted with the little shots of brightness contained in ‘virtue’, ‘riches’ and ‘spirit’, and finally properly countered right at the end by the hope and the want embodied in the last sentence. I hope this reflects how you are feeling right now, keep writing!

As we grow older, we all reach turning points, or crossroads, that change our lives forever. You know where your path has lead you to this point, but it is clear in your writing that you want more from life. I understand the emptiness you describe, but it is not never-ending; you just have to find the hope within you, and writing will help you find that hope. A fulfilling life requires one thing: determination. Keep writing and find the determination in you!

This is a beautifully haunting poem. I love the imagery of thinking you were getting something for free when something was being taken from you at the same time. And now, only when you realize it’s gone, do you find that what you precieved as free was really being taken little by little from the start. What a powerful poem. This is a feeling that many people can relate to from looking back at mistakes they made in their own lifes. Keep writing. This poem is very moving.

    To the author,
This poem seems to reveal quite a frightening revelation you experienced. Your poem explains the loss of time you experienced from the life you lived and now a longing for a different path. I love the rhythm you used throughout the poem as well as the key words of hope.
    Respectfully,
    CJ
