Young black prince
living in a world
that don’t recognize your presence,
your existence feeling
the wrath of your resistance,
seeing the hate in your eyes
from morning and evening news lies.
Young black prince,
the odds are against you
but you have to hold strong
like a clenched black fist,
mighty enough to turn
your past into existence
from a prince to a king!
A young black prince dream!

As I read your poem, HC, I find myself wanting to ask you questions. What does it mean to you to be a prince, a king? What do those look like for you? Is the “hate in your eyes” real or are you not full of hate but are labeled so by the “news lies”? What do you think you’ll have to do to “turn your past”? Will it mainly mean using “a clenched black fist” or will you have to unclench that fist to allow yourself to receive something or grasp the open hand of another?
It feels like you’re weathering a storm, waiting for the chance to burst forth. Will it be the dazzling but short-lived burst of fireworks or the breaking through of a seed that will slowly grow into a beautiful flower or majestic tree?

Excellent piece. It’s sad to see the opposition young black men face to grow in this modern-day world, but you’re providing a wonderful message by reminding them to stay strong and don’t let your oppressors take away your pride, dignity, and potential!
