In Her Eyes

By JG

I see the potential for forever
Subtle glimpses of lifetimes spent together
I see the heart of a mother
Tempered with the mind of a queen
I see an intelligent, competent conscious woman
Made for nothing less than a king
Strength and vulnerability are also there
Along with passion and compassion
And if I happen to be the vaguest question
She’s the specified answer
I see a deep ocean full of love
That’s barely been touched
And I just want to go deep sea diving
Giving her all of me
In exchange for us
Her beauty goes without saying
My soul yearns for more
Her eyes tell me likewise
And my soul is assured
I see the potential of forever
But if we ever part ways
I’ll always remember the power and potential
That live in her gaze

    JG,

It is amazing that you can tell so much about a person just from their eyes. The love that you have for this woman is clear and her beauty is apparent from this poem. I love the message of this poem, that if you go your separate ways, you will still have admiration for her. This is truly an ode to her and she is lucky you think the world of her. Thank you for sharing this beautifully-written poem.

I thought this was a lovely poem, JG! The yearning and passion in your poem is palpable, and it is coupled with a deep sense of awe and admiration at this person you speak of. I appreciate the line where you talk of “giving her all of me in exchange for us”. Truly, there cannot be love and romance without sacrifice, and I think this is something you and many famous Romantic poets before you have made clear.

This poem is such a beautiful way to communicate your love for whomever this person is. I can really get a sense of how you feel for her because you don’t focus on physical attributes, just her personal qualities that truly make her who she is: “an intelligent, competent conscious woman,” passionate and compassionate. The last few lines, “I see the potential of forever / But if we ever part ways / I’ll always remember the power and potential / That live in her gaze,” made me tear up. It reminds me of that phrase “if you love them, let them go” and the inevitability of some goodbyes in life. I hope, however, you and she get to see forever together. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece!
