If I Was Your Man
By JP
Even if we cannot be together
I hope he adores you and your heart he treasures
Makes you smile because your smile brings so much pleasure
And he blows your mind beyond its wildest measures
I hope he buys you flowers
Gives you his coat in rain storms and showers
Listens to you, talk for hours
And he keeps you safe from snakes, busters, and cowards
I hope he holds your hands
Kisses your soft lips no matter where you stand
Don’t get mad when you make numerous demands
And that all your wishes are his commands
I hope he cherishes the ground you walk on
Never argues with you and lets bygones be bygones
Builds you back up when your confidence is torn
And that he buys you new shoes when yours get old and worn
I hope he takes you out to eat and dance
It may sound corny but it’s all romance
If he does this then I know I don’t stand a chance
These are the things I would’ve done if I was your man

I REALLY like the way you build to your ending–both of the last two lines work so well! It’s powerful because of my realization of your own loss and, at the same time, how this man you imagine her getting could have been you, since you now understand what she needs. If you work on this poem, I’d suggest doing something with the first line because I think it might give too much away. Also, if someone who didn’t know your status was reading this poem, they might not get why you can’t be her man (unless I’m misunderstanding the poem). Nice work.
Even though you cannot be her man now, someday you can take these sweet thoughts to a young lady and treat her as special as you have spoken in this writing. .
I hope she reads this. Any woman would be flattered.
This is beautiful. Even if you can’t be her man, believe me that you will find another woman whom you can love and adore the way you describe in this poem. I hope you never forget all of the things you wrote here.
