I Really Don’t Know

By D’Nell

I come from a long line of soldiers
We are as tough as a rope
I grew up in Stanton Oaks
They call me D’Nell
Because I’m real like steel
When I come around
It’s like I never left
My voice sounds like smooth jazz
It’s as mellow as a Sunday
My eyes are as brown as dirt
Right now my life is like hell
My future is as real as it can get

    Hi D’Nell,

I really liked the honesty of this poem. The title made me want to read it because I thought it could be about anything. I like the way you describe the many facets of yourself; you’re tough, but your voice sounds like smooth jazz. I’d be interested in knowing what else you learn about yourself in the future, and I hope your life isn’t like hell forever. Thank you for sharing and inspiring me to examine myself: what am I sure of and what’s uncertain.

I like the self-awareness of your poem. You know where you come from and you’ve acknowledge what you’ve been through. Thank you for your honesty!
