Cambio es Posible

I always used to say I walked alone
while I was above the influence
I always used to say “No me vale nada”
when I used to do anything
Now I always say I’m walking with a guardian angel
In the presence of god
Now I say I’m sorry for the dumb mistakes
I did while I was out there
And now once I touch down
I can accomplish my lifelong goal
And become a businessman

    Dear Poet,

One of the things I loved about this poem was the way you mix Spanish and English. It gives the poem a distinct sound and a unique voice. It helps me get a sense of who the speaker is and where they’re coming from. The title is really great. I also really like the contrast between how the speaker used to be (“I always used to…”) and how they are now (“Now I…”) I especially love the image “Once I touch down.” It makes a connection between the guardian angel and the speaker, who also wants to fly.

I think you could expand on the last line. Instead of just saying, “be a businessman,” you could tell us what that looks like. What will the speaker see/feel/hear in that future life? Will the guardian angel still be there? Maybe you could add a few lines with “Then I will…” to mirror “I used to..” and “Now I…”

Wonderful work. This poem made me think about my own past and the feelings I have–some regretful, some happy, and excited, hopeful and dreaming for the future. Thank you for sharing this hopeful and courageous poem.
