Another One

By BG

I just had to write another one
No need to end on a bad note
I have plenty of reasons to smile
I’ve learned plenty of ways to cope
I love to laugh and chill
I love to work and play
God is my savior
To Him, I pray

My family is strong
My friends are well
I am listening to songs
Right here in my cell
So I appreciate what I used to overlook
This is just a page of a chapter of a story in my book
To you I thank for sending a postcard my way
Like your postcard made mine,
I hope this poem makes your day

This poem did make my day! Thank you for writing it! It is good to have hope. I love the line “this is just a page of a chapter of a story in my book”–really nice.

My favorite lines of your poem were:
    “I am listening to songs
    Right here in my cell
So I appreciate what I used to overlook
This is just a page of a chapter of a story in my book”
I could feel your presence so strongly through your words, which is one of the most important things a poem do, I think. I also loved the way these lines reverberate beyond the small space of the cell–first with the music (which can’t be caged) and the with the line “This is just a page of a chapter of a story in my book”–it expands out, grows larger, from page, to chapter, to story, to book.

    BG,

Thank you for this light-hearted poem! It’s easy to get so caught up in negative emotions and moments that you can forget about the good moments that came before and that will come after. It’s nice that you took the time with your great poem to remind readers of that. Thank you for your positivity!

    Hi BG,

Thank you for sharing this lovely poem. It’s inspiring that you’ve learned ways to cope and found faith as a means of guidance. I am glad that Free Minds allows people to connect and talk about the things that are important in life. Writing allows us to reflect; be thankful, sad, happy, angry, etc. When we share writing, we can give a part of ourselves to others. Thanks for sharing your positivity and beautiful outlook on life.

    BG,

I love the message of your poem: The good outweighs the bad in life. I like how you include your faith in your work and how God has guided you through tough times. By the way, your poem did make my day! Thank you for sharing.

I am a student in a community service course at Wayne State in Detroit whose goal is to engage with the community beyond the university. When I discovered Free Minds I was immediately thrilled to see the connections build around your writings and heart, and what you have to offer is a powerful and beautiful gift to the community. It was a true privilege getting the opportunity to read what is on your heart and mind, your desires and passions, thoughts, and struggles. You have so much to say, so much wisdom to give, and such deep experiences and desires to share with the community that people from all walks of life, backgrounds, beliefs, and ages can deeply connect with and affiliate with. Keep engaging with the community and making your voice heard. You bring healing, hope, and renewal of mind to many who have the privilege to share in your poetry. Your poem is so humble and comes from a place of gratitude. People complain all the time about really anything, yet you are living in an unideal place and yet being so thankful for laughing, chilling, working, playing, God, the health of your family and friends, songs, and little moments every day that make you smile. This poem is a testament to your faith and humility, and it most definitely made my day. I pray you keep writing and encourage you in this, “Use me, God. Show me how to take who I am, who I want to be, and what I can do, and use it for a purpose greater than myself.”― Martin Luther King Jr.

This poetry transports me back to a time when I was much younger. I used to write to God all the time when I was younger, hoping that he would heal my troubles or forgive me for the sins I had committed that day. As a result, when I was younger and having difficulty with something, he was my friend. Because of public education, I have drifted farther away from God, but I am working to reconnect with him by becoming more active with a private school.
