Poem: “Mystery Lover”

Mystery Lover

This girl dun blind my view like a shiny watch,
She has my head thinkin’ emotional like the speech at the Million Man March.
Sometimes I just reminisce and smile,
Because of how much I miss her.
Her ways, her style, her whole demeanor,
I never knew I would find such a strong, independent black sistah
that I could talk to like she is my biological sistah.
She knows who’s real and who’s a wangsta
So don’t try to bring your weak game if you a pranksta.
Most dudes can’t even handle her
They say she too aggressive or mean,
I say that’s my mystery lover
You just don’t know how to persuade her.

    Poem: “Mystery Lover”
I like how you describe this strong woman, your mystery lover. And while other men feel intimidated by her, you’re not “afraid” to approach her because you and her have already a connection.

Most dudes can’t even handle her
They say she too aggressive or mean,
I say that’s my mystery lover
You just don’t know how to persuade her.

    Hi there,

I was immediately drawn to this poem from its captivating title. I’m quite the sucker for a romantic poem. 🙂

I love the simile in the very first sentence when you compare your crush blinding your view like the way a shiny watch would do if you were to look at the watch face in the direct sunlight. It’s got great imagery and it’s incredibly adorable.

I also love the allusion in the second line where you reference the speech at the Million Man March. I actually had no idea what this was, so your poem prompted me to look it up and learn more about it (thank you!) 🙂

I can tell by the way you speak about this person that you really like them – it comes through really clearly in the ways that you describe her personality.

This is a really beautiful piece. If she knows you like her, I hope she knows how lucky she is.

    Best,
    A

I love the confidence of this poem! You don’t care what anyone has to say about the woman you love, because you know she’s for you! You appreciate things in your lover that others don’t. Nice work!

    Best,

    Samantha
